Nokia N73 Music Edition Firmware Available!

Well, a few weeks ago, it was posted in several places that the N73 had finally been granted access to the Nokia Software Updater. However, certain region codes weren’t available, including the one that I had, Region 01. I read in several places that if you use Nemesis Software Suite to change the product code of your N73, you could then use Nokia Software Updater to update the firmware of your N73. So I gave it a go. Worked wonderfully. Upon further reading, I also found that the new Music Edition firmware was available if you used a certain product code. So I absolutely gave it a shot, and it worked awesome, as well.

Some things to note:
1. This process *could* void your warranty
2. The only languages supported by the Music Edition firmware that I received are either English or Chinese/Japanese. ( I apologize, I cannot read either, and thus cannot tell a difference. However, I did take a screenshot of the language selection screen for those interested.

The music player is awesome.

A screenshot of Handy Taskman showing free memory. 16.9 with Music
Player and Screenshot running isn’t bad at all. Something interesting
is that there is no longer an "exit" option on the Music Player. It’s
simply always running.

The only two languages that this particular firmware supports is
English and I believe Chinese (though I have no clue if it’s
Traditional or Simple). The English works just fine, though, and
contacts are sortable in FirstNm LastNm mode.

Here is the screen you’re greeted with in the Music Player. I didn’t really use theScreenshot0005
Music Player feature before, so I don’t know how different this is.
It’s pretty straightforward. One thing I did notice is that songs that
may be correctly tagged in iTunes will not transfer all the tagging
over. I would guess that this is because iTunes uses different tagging.
All of my music is DRM-free MP3s with album art and correct
artist/titles, but ripped into MP3 format using iTunes. It comes with
one song, a Moby track with Album Art.

Screenshot0002This
track, in iTunes, has album art associated with it, but it didn’t pull
into the Nokia Music Player. One of these days I’m going to give iTunes
the boot and go back to Winamp, I believe the tags that they use will
transfer nicely. Anyways, it’s a cleaner layout than the standard Music
Player, I think. The "up" direction doesn’t do anything, which helps to
read how to manipulate the track. The middle of the joystick
plays/pauses the track, left and right skip (or fast forward if you
hold them down) and then down is stop.

Screenshot0004
Here is the greatest screen of them all, the Visualizer. I’ve wanted an
MP3 player with a visualization screen for a long time now, and I’m
really stoke about this. My one complaint is that the track playing
info is incredibly small, and only shows the track, not the artist or
how far into the song you are. There are three options, the Album Art
(which simply shows the Album Art as a thumbnail in the middle of the
screen), Oscilloscope (which I couldn’t for the life of me get a
screenshot of, but it’s purple), and Spectrum Analyzer (pictured
right). It’s kind of a pain to get to, and I’m hoping there’s a keypad
shortcut that I just haven’t found yet, but it’s still amazingly nice
to have.

Thus far I’m really impressed with the new Music Player. When you’re
looking at all of your songs, it displays the total playing time of all
the songs together at the top of the screen.

Other than the music organization (and the Media Key is now
dedicated ONLY to the Music Player) there’s not a whole lot of
differences that I have found.

The official firmware specs are:

V 3.0638.0.0.30
30-10-2006
RM-133
Nokia N73 (11)

Now to wait for cnn.cn to have the housings available…
