How Do YOU Setup Your Menu?

On the debate table right now between Stefan and Tommi (and others chiming in) is the current setup of S60 phones. Personally, I have noticed a trend of moving stuff around in there, so that out of the box, just about every S60 phone I’ve used (6620, N-Gage QD, N80, N73, E62) has different apps in different folders. Some devices have folders that others don’t, and vice versa. It’s madness…..or is it?

One of the things that I personally LOVE about S60 devices is that I can move everything in the menu to whatever configuration I want. If I want to dump EVERY app into the main menu, I can. If I want to create my own folders and put stuff in them, I can do that, too. That’s something you can’t do (nearly as easy) on a Windows Mobile 5 device.

So personally, I disagree with Tommi that it needs work. I will agree, though, that every S60 phone should be setup at least SOMEWHAT similar out of the box. Read on for examples of how I have my N73 and E62 setup, maybe you’ll see something you like, or leave a comment if you have a way that you like to set your menu up…

My N73 is setup with a "fun" layout. The first thing I do on any S60 device is make sure I have a Web folder and a Crap folder. Web is for any app that is web-centric. Obviously both browsers should be in the same folder. Also any 3rd party browsers go in there, as well as apps like Google Maps Mobile and Symella/SymTorrent.

The Media folder should have apps that are (appropriately) media focused, like Podcasting, ShoZu, MobiReader, and Smartmovie (I also have Internet Radio in here, cause I think it’s more about the music and not the streaming).

For some reason, I always put Profiles, Settings, and Themes out into the main menu, and I make sure that they are on a line, in that order. Why, I don’t know.

The "Crap" folder is anything that I don’t really access through the menu, such as contacts, log, calendar (this is one of my active standby apps), and all the help stuff.

If I have more than one of a 3rd party app for the same purpose, I’ll make a folder for that. I.e. if I have Nav4All, Wayfinder, AND TomTom (which, when testing apps, I often do) I’d have a Nav folder. Or IM or whatever the case may be. Games are always in their own "Games" folder.

I also put the Clock in the main menu so that it’s less keystrokes to set my alarm at night. And any utility-type apps (spot-on, y-browser, screenshot, etc.) goes in the Tools folder.

Screenshots coming soon, as well as my E62 menu setup.

You know… I’ve been doing this ever since my 6600 days. It makes searching for things more easier and by me organizing it myself its much easier to get too. I’ve created a folder for daily use and have also rearranged the appropriate apps to a media folder.
I also had to make a games folder because on the N73 it doesn’t have one.
Not only that, by creating and managing folders this can give you more room on your active standy.
