MobliNews, RSS Reader for S60v3

News1
I wanted to put this feature in the headline, but it got too long, so I’m glad you decided to read this. I’m disgustingly addicted to my RSS reader. It’s sad. But I saw this app on AllAboutSymbian this morning, and thought it has huge potential.

MobliNews RSS Reader for S60v3 is your run-of-the-mill news reader, with preset horoscopes and news and sports scores. You can also add your own RSS feeds. They claim they’re "the most popular Symbian RSS/ATOM reader" but I haven’t heard of them before today.

But here’s the kicker:

MobliNews can display the items within the feeds
within the front view or via the scrolling news ticker which still
remains on the screen even when the application is hidden to the
background. This means that the user can use their phone as normal and
still view the live football scores! This has never before been seen on
a mobile/cell phone.

News2
That’s right. Here’s the screenshot, this basically puts a banner across your screen that’s always updated with the recent RSS headlines. THAT’S AWESOME.

The app is only $4.99, and there’s no trial. I’ll be buying it when I get home. If you jump the gun and get it now, be sure to leave a comment with your thoughts. I’m interested to see how customizable that scroller is.

Wow, that was fast (or a big coincidence)! I made the following entry in the s60.com wishlist on Jan 10: http://www.s60.com/life/application/wishlist/displayWishDetails.do?wishId=200&activeCat=-2

    Gotta love that wish list!

I wonder if it requires a constant Data Connection or is it configurable to check every hour or so. Any word on it yet?

Well I tried it out and all I can say is – don’t bother.

    No subscription list
    No feed autoupdates
Only able to update and view (manually only) one feed at a time
Only scrolls headlines from one URL at a time

Worst of all – App closes automatically after it scrolls through the headlines one time!!

    What’s the point! :(

Thanks for the heads up Zach. That’s a shame, though, it had promise. Streaming RSS headlines on the standby screen of my mobile would be AWESOME.

Give me a break you guys!

I have fixed the problem with the app closing after going through the headlines one time. I am in the process of contacting those who purchased it.

I can easily implement any changes that you wish – you only had to send me an email!

And yes, the headlines are streamed in the standby mode of the mobile :-P

My apologies, Ian. I have purchased a copy just now and will be installing it now. I’ll also send you an email in the next few days if I have any thoughts other than what Zach mentioned above.
