SymSMB for S60v3 – WiFi File Sharing

Symsmb110
Telexy Networks has released a cool new product called SymSMB for S60v3 devices equipped with WiFi. It allows you to share specific folders on your device, and then access them via WiFi from any PC. That’s about it. The app costs $20, and there is a trial, if you’d like to check it out.

I’m going to pass, first off cause I don’t currently have a WiFi-equipped phone. Secondly because this is only halfway to where I think WiFi on phones should be. What about the other direction? What if I have a folder full of movies on my PC that I want to watch on my phone from the back porch? Why can’t I use the PHONE to browse a shared folder on my COMPUTER? That right there is the real killer app for WiFi, in my opinion. Perhaps the next version of SymSMB?

You can already do this, the whole “watch movies from the back-deck” scenario, but it’s not exactly user friendly. Using the UPnP power between your phone, computer, and router, it works very well… but the setup is a pain in the arse.

I was completely unable to do it only over my WiFi network, when I had my N80. Of course I could do it through Orb, but that doesn’t count. I shouldn’t need a third party acting as a server. I should be able to scan my network for shared folders and then browse those folders. At least that’s how I would expect it.

Didn’t realize that you had already posted about orb there. An easy way to do this is to set up Apache on your home p.c. Copy the folder to share to Apache’s htdocs folder. Start up Apache. Go to 192.168.x.x (your pc’s current ip)from your phone’s browser and browse the folder.

BTW, this application works NOT ONLY under Wi-Fi!
Developers are declaring Wi-Fi openly everywhere,
but there is not too much in publications about another options.
So they left it to only one who can read between the lines.
Generally speaking it is TRANSPORT-INDEPENDENT system!
It works with Access Point that phone have, that all it needs.
It could be Wi-Fi, GPRS, BT and something else.
Hire is the link how to setup Bluetooth Access Point on your phone:

P.S. I guess they did it just with one purpose – just to have a great laugh
while reading posts in Internet as someone complains that hi or she
for some reasons needs something else except of Wi-Fi. :)
