GDC Thus Far – N-Gage on N73?

As I am sure you already know, GDC (Game Developers Conference) started on Monday, and Nokia said they were going to have a huge presence.

I suppose they have, but not nearly what I was hoping/wishing for. Thus far (there’s still a few days left) they’ve merely announced a few new games and some different platform specifics. But nothing on what REALLY matters – THE PHONES!

We all know that it’s been said before that the new Ngage platform would run on S60 devices, and probably all N-series (though I’m sure it will shortly be extracted for E-series enjoyment). Well, I was perusing through Engadget’s photo gallery of the show, and came across this one of the Nokia "booth"

Looks like a row of phones to me. Let’s see if we can’t pick them out. The obvious one is the N93. However, what are those to the right of it? Could it be? The N73?! That would lead me to believe that the N73 is one of the phones that will be enabled at launch for the new Ngage platform. Sweet!

I was there today actually and yes, they had 3 phones available for people to play with, the N93, the N73, and an occassional N80. The N76 and N95 were on show under a sheet of glass, but nothing I could tinker with.

I have to say, System Rush was quite impressive on the N73, and VERY impressive on the N93. It ran very smoothly on both. Playing with the N-Gage interface, it’s quite nicely laid out, and seems like a good way to jump between games, friends lists, messaging people to play, check out new games, etc. It’s all very clean and polished looking. I was a stark opponent of the original N-Gage, as it was widely viewed as a bad game system, instead of a good-for-gaming cell phone. With these phones and the new N-Gage interface, it just makes a cell phone you may already want, feel like a cell phone that happens to be a pretty good game system.

Sadly, despite offers of bribes, the people working the booth wouldn’t give any specifics on launch timing (other than Fall), what phones would be supported, or even if the phones at the show are some that would be supported. All I got out of them was that the N-Gage platform as a whole doesn’t require hardware 3d acceleration, but that some games may be hardware 3d only.
