Nokia N99 Slider Patent

This showed up on Gizmodo recently, and Olly brought it to my attention. It’s another new N99, different from Darla’s "find" (;))

Interesting to me that there’s no sign of either end/send keys or softkeys, much less the tell-tale S60 button cluster. Probably cause these are obviously rough sketches, but still. I’m not sure how I feel about that twisty number-pad, either. What about you?

  1. that is weirdlooking. wonder how the final one will come out. good find!

  2. I doubt that would ever come out. Looks too gimmicky to me.

  3. I believe it will come out.
I also believe it is a touchscreen phone… Ricky noticed the absence of the many S60 usual buttons (menu, c, pen, 2 soft keys and send/end keys)
But no one noticed that the joystick and the soft keys are on the swivel number pad and NOT on the main unit? Hm…
It wouldn’t be smart to have a non touchscreen phone that’s not usable in the main mode, until you slide or swivel another part.
That would be a stupid design.

  4. Rita,

You’d think it’d be a stupid design, but Nokia’s done it before with the 7370:

  5. I liked the 7650 slider mobile, it’s beautiful in shape and it’s slider was engineered so perfectly when you open it as curved and comparing todays cellphones they are horribly straight when open slide. Maybe the N99 will look similar to the 7650 design but the sliding will have different ways.
