A Little Closer to Threaded SMS

As you know, ThreadSMS came available recently, and I was able to review it. It’s a great start, and I know Nick, the developer, is constantly working to improve the app. My main gripe, along with others, is that it doesn’t replace the system new message notification, meaning when you get a new message, you have to cancel the system notice and open ThreadSMS, which is a bit tedious.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch….

The other day, Zach from the Applications Review blog posted a great
walkthrough about a small app called TalkinSilent. I won’t go into huge
detail here, mainly because Zach puts together the most thorough
walkthroughs ever. However, there’s an additional app that you can
choose to install as part of TalkinSilent called TextChat. Basically,
TextChat is a plugin of sorts that allows you to have a threaded SMS
conversation with someone. I think there are other benefits, as well,
but I haven’t played enough yet to know for sure.

The best part is that TalkinSilent runs constantly in the background,
meaning that when you get a new SMS, it pops up and asks if you want to
start chatting. It then opens a threaded "chat" style window with
whoever just texted you!!! It’s VERY limited right now - there’s no
history, and as far as I can tell you can only have a conversation with
one person at a time, but it’s a great start!

Right now, apparently, TalkinSilent is headed for distribution straight
through a Carrier, which sucks for us on the North American continent,
where providers don’t like S60v3 devices, apparently. Zach and I both
have emailed the CEO, however, in hopes that they’ll see the light and
distribute this puppy freely for all to enjoy. Leave a comment if you
agree with us.
