Have you ever wanted to be your own cellphone carrier? Now you can, with Sonopia. It’s a startup MVNO launched by Symbian-founder Juha Christensen. Though you can’t get a Sonopia phone or service. Sonopia offers a MVNO quick-start solution for brands that want their OWN MVNO. For instance, if I wanted to have Symbian-Guru.com Wireless, I could with Sonopia. Though it wouldn’t work out very good, as they’re leasing airtime from Verizon Wireless.
It’s all very interesting, but I personally just don’t see the draw of MVNOs. There’s little to no community, which, in the ‘States, is what it’s all about with massive Mobile-To-Mobile calling and texting. It’s even MORE interesting, to me, that the guy who helped found Symbian is now offering an MVNO service that uses CDMA, for which there are ZERO Symbian devices.
What do you think? Would you want a Symbian-Guru.com Wireless Phone, with no Symbian? I didn’t think so. A cool idea, but I don’t see it going too far.
