Gizmo Project on N80 and N95

Gizmo2
The news is out, Gizmo Project is officially available from Nokia’s Beta Labs as well as in the Download! client on both the Nokia N80 and the N95. Gizmo Project is a MOIP (Mobile Voip) application that is available now for your PC, N800, and WiFi-enabled N-series devices. It also supports IM, as well as plenty of other functions.

Personally, I’m only just really jumping into the whole MOIP arena. It’s fascinating how many different players there are, with Skype, Vonage, TruPhone, Gizmo, etc. A great place to get information on all these is Andy Abramson’s blog Voip Watch.

I’m also still trying to figure out the need for all this. I realize
there are people who talk on the phone ALOT more than I do. I’m on
Cingular’s smallest voice plan and still manage to accumulate vast
numbers of Rollover. I also don’t do alot of International calling.
Maybe it’s because I’ve been so accustomed to the massive rates that
Cingular or a landline provider would charge. Who knows.

I did want to point out, however, that there are 2 ways to get the
Gizmo Project application on your phone. The right way, and the wrong
way, apparently. The wrong way is to use the Download! Application on
the N95 (I can’t really speak for the N80). The right way, however, is
to go to Nokia’s Beta Labs website and download 2 .sis files. For some
reason, the application that is loaded into the Download! app only
configures the settings internally on the phone. It doesn’t give you
the full-blown app with IM and all the contact list integration. Why? I
don’t know. Just want to make sure you’re aware.

However, that’s that. Feel free to give me a shout on Gizmo Project,
I’m "grcadden." If I don’t answer, leave a message. Darla also has some great thoughts on the Gizmo project over at her site.

  1. It’s great if you travel a lot to other countries, as you can use the hotels WIFI to call home at local rates, instead of paying the astronomically high roaming rates of the local carrier.

I guess this is mainly a problem in Europe, where the EU are just about to pass a law to put a limit to the price carriers can charge for roaming.

But basically if you are frequently in another country than your own, MOIP can save you a lot of money when calling home.

  2. Indeed - truphone has been running free calls to US landlines for a while now. When I was in Europe and Australia, I was able to call the folks for free! Can’t beat that.

  3. Gizmo from betalabs is total BS..doesn’t work and freezes the N95. Download from the download folder on the phone and it’s all ok..

  4. There are so many providers at the moment, I have tested them all on my n93 and can personally vouch for OneFone from a company called WifiMobile. Truphone didn’t work well for me.

  5. I agree, all the other crash and cut off too much. You can go to http://www.wifimobile.com to download the software free.

  6. I have been using Gizmo on my N80ie and it works fine. There are some issues at times where it takes a while to connect to the call but all in all, I have been pleasantly surprised with it.

  7. I agree, I have wasted hours testing these things out, onefone is my personal pick too.

  8. I live in INDIA. I have gizmo supported phones N80 and N95 . If i install gizmo on the phones will I be able to make call between the two phones free of cost.
Will the same work if I connect to internet using GPRS WAP or i need to be in WI-Fi network
