Google Maps Mobile - Now (not) With GPS

The Boy Genius Report brings more good news - Google Maps Mobile has been updated to v1.05(1), and apparently supports built-in GPS on devices! I noticed, when downloading, that it now recognizes my N95, as opposed to earlier when it just said "Nokia Advanced."

Note: If you already have Google Maps Mobile installed, you’ll need to uninstall it before installing this version. Otherwise, it will not load, at least in my experience.

With Google so heavily into ads, I think this is cool, and also a thread to the other java GPS, and even a bit of a threat to TomTom and Smart2Go, as it will be free, and have Satellite imagery in addition to regular roads. There doesn’t seem to be a menu option for the GPS, but I’ve got it sitting next to the window, so we’ll see if it picks up my location. I will update soon.

**Update** I don’t think it has GPS in it. I was unable to get a signal, nor find any menus or anything within the app having to do with GPS. Also, perusing the site didn’t offer any details, either. The GPS must be for Blackberries only. Though, I’m not aware that any Blackberries HAVE built-in GPS.

  1. Based on the google info page about the GPS (under what’s new) it’s for the Helio device only. http://www.google.com/gmm/helio

  2. …and Windows Mobile.

  3. I don’t think it supports GPS.

I installed the new version over the old and it seems to have replaced over it. It did prompt me to install over it also.

  4. Actually the latest blackberry’s do have GPS.

  5. Just tested on my Blackberry 8800, the only difference is, when launched, asks to press 0 to go to current location. The GPS location shows up as a little dot. There are no visible differences in the application other than, 1) the prompt to press “0″ to go to current location when you launch the app. 2) the visible dot on the map showing your current location and 3) In the directions menu there is a new option called “Use my Location”.

I uninstalled my old google maps and installed the new version on both my N95 and BB8800, the BB8800 is the only one that looks to be integrated with the built-in GPS.

  6. GMM has had GPS in it for a while now. It only works on a handful of devices including some Blackberry. They are working on other versions now.

  7. I want GPS support!! I have a bluetooth gps receiver, and my Sony Ericsson w960, every other program detects teh GPS but no google maps!
