More Info On Creatures Of The Deep - Ngage

Creaturesofthedeep
Stefan found this great podcast that covers a ton of different questions that I’ve had about the Creatures of the Deep game coming for the Ngage platform. Personally, I could see this being the first game that I buy. Stefan doesn’t sound too enthused about it, but here’s why I think it’ll be a success:

First off, while fishing sounds boring, one thing they really cover in the podcast is that it’s really a fun, addicting game. Apparently there will be a TON of different creatures you can catch, and they’re even working on using the camera of your device as a motion sensor, in Wii-like fashion. Sounds cool.

Secondly, I just don’t think, specifically with the battery life of devices like the N95, I don’t see gaming as something that you’re going to sit and do for hours. I think gaming is going to be huge in the times where you only have 5-20 minutes available. I know that most of the levels that I’ve achieved on Snakes was completed in the john. Also standing in line somewhere, riding mass transit, etc. These are places I could really see gaming being a killer app to have on your mobile, and where I think most sales will be made.

Plus I just like fishing. What do you think? Are you excited about the new Ngage Platform, or do you think it’ll bomb just like the previous version? What games do you think will do well, or which ones do you think won’t do well?

  1. VERY much looking forward to it…oddly enough since I generally hated on the original N-Gage (though this was before I was a cell phone guy, and when I thought the N-Gage was just a crappy GBA wanna-be). I just wish they’d officially announce support for a handset or two so I could buy one NOW and know it’d be covered.

The studies in mobile gaming show something to the effect of games should NEVER be longer than 10-15 minutes per play session. Longer games are ok, but you must be able to make progress, and save that progress, in no more than a 10 minute play. I think the optimal timing was 3-5 minutes.

And as for Snakes…never played it on my n80 until this weekend. It’s a lot more fun and challenging than I had given it credit for at later levels.

  2. I think the N-Gage platform will be a great success, and will rule gaming on cell phones for a good couple of years at least. I can only raise my hat for Nokia for having the vision and guts with the original N-Gage and QD, no matter how many problems they had, it thought Nokia a lot about the gaming business.

Creatures of the Deep looks great EXCEPT that there appears still to be no animation for when the fish is actually coming out of the water.. how lame is that.. :(
