Site Updates

Workinprogress
With internet not transferred to my new house yet (Wednesday, come quickly!), I’ve been very limited in my abilities as of late. However, I did have time to make a few updates, and also have a reader request down in 3a.

1. Switched the RSS feed to full content – I went back and forth on
this. Personally, I don’t like full feeds, but that’s mainly because I
do alot of my "weeding" on my mobile, and if someone has full posts,
it’s a pain to scroll all the way down, hit "add star", and then scroll
all the way down again. My N95 has a full HTML browser, so if I wanted
to read the whole thing, I could. However, I read several conversations
online about it and decided I’d do it and see what you guys think.

I could also figure out how setup a partial-post feed, as well, if there are requests for it. Just let me know. Click through to get the rest…

2. Updated my Theme and Ringtone – they’re both changed, I think you’ll really like the new ringtone. I know I do!

3. I have a laundry list of design changes I want to make. The first is
to fix the middle column so that it’s static, or so that the whole
thing scales with your window. This is a huge task for me as I know
zilch about CSS and all that, and basically learn as I go. It will
literally take me probably an entire day.

3a. Mobile-Friendly – I have the Winksite (linked on the right sidebar)
but I want to get something that will automatically detect what device
you’re using to access my site, and offer up a mobile-optimized version
if appropriate. I would also like to register m.Symbian-Guru.com, but
have no clue how to do so. Any help that anyone would like to offer up
in regards to either of those (for Typepad) I would much appreciate it.
And you can go to m.symbian-guru.com on your mobile device to get to it!! Yay and thanks to the commenters!

3b. I know that http://symbian-guru.com doesn’t come here. When I first
started, I was on blogger, then moved to WordPress, and finally settled
on Typepad, and never got the hosting moved for
http://symbian-guru.com
. Again, any suggestions are tremendously
appreciated.

4. I am going to redo the sidebars (at least the right one) and have a
cool new feature that I’d like to add, but it’s going to take some
time. Look for it in the next few months.

5. As soon as I get the leader complete, and credits, I plan to make
the Driving With The Guru episodes syndicated in a video Podcast feed,
so you can subscribe and either get it on your S60 or iPod or PC. Look
for that as well.

As always, any site suggestions are welcomed, after all, you guys get more use out of it than I do.

That middle column problem is a real issue for and prevents me form reading the full article. Its just so squashed up and i have to resort to going fullscreen just to read it.
I hope you have good luck sorting it out. CSS is fun, but it can be a tad difficult to learn, especially with XML.

Guru – for Driving with the Guru, have you thought about getting a PDA mount (one of those suction based ones) to hold the phone? Take a look at some Top Gear or Fifth Gear clips on YouTube to see how the camera is mounted for in-car reviews. I think that’ll make the Driving segments even better for viewers and free up your hands as well.

Hey Ricky, regarding domain issues in 3, it depends on who you registered your domain name with. Is it godaddy.com? If so, these two FAQ articles might help:

You should be able to add the m.Symbian-Guru.com subdomain and also redirect symbian-guru.com to here. Let me know if this works out for you or otherwise.

@Bazza hopefully wednesday, if the internet people get here early enough I’ll have time to play and fix it.

@Eric I’ll look into it. Wonder if Nokia would “sponsor” the show by sending me one? :)

@Cybette THANK YOU. I *think* I got it setup, I do indeed use GoDaddy.com. It might take a while to get it to work, if anyone wants to give it a go, m.symbian-guru.com SHOULD send you straight to the winksite.

@David check your email inbox. :)

@Kriegspiel thanks for the headsup. I fixed both the ringtone and theme links.

No offense guru, but the ringtone is quite annooooooying. I know I would be throwing my 3250 out of the window if it rang like that! My ringtone is, ehm, well, vibrate. I’m on silent profile basically 95% of the time (if not 99.99%) so no ringtone hassle for me :D

Regarding the feeds, i don’t know what Typepad etc does for you, i expect it’s mostly behind the scenes and you know little of it, however it shouldn’t be too difficult if you have some level of control to have two feeds, one full, one summary.

I personally use the full feeds as I read them at work, and looking at my RSS causes a lot less suspicious glances from he guvner than your website. Perhaps a niche reason but still thats my preference.

All changes sound good though, none there that seem like they could have a negative effect.

Good luck (wish i could help more!)
