More Details on N95 Firmware

Screenshot0006
I’ve been playing with this new firmware on my N95 for the past few days, and have come up with a bit of a changelog (as well as testing out questions that were put forth in the original thread). It’s obviously nothing technical, but the best I can offer.

Also, please note that this firmware is not available through NSU, so don’t bother trying. I have no estimate as to when this update will be released publicly, nor do I even know if this one WILL be publicly released. I’m only sharing what improvements I can see Nokia working on, and I can say that I’m impressed and pleased that they continually offer upgrades to products’ firmware, to ensure that bugs are fixed.

Here’s what I’ve found thus far:

1. Tracking is still available in Maps, and it still auto-tracks when
it locks the signal. It does NOT have the new map view, with the
updated GPS-status and data estimation displays. It DOES come with a
free, 3-day voice navigation trial (which is a GREAT touch!)

2. A-GPS uses minimal data. Getting a connection used 6kb of data;
1.5kb sent, 5.5kb received. Not too shabby. I have no idea how much it
would use constantly, but I’d say that’s pretty thrifty. I have an
unlimited data plan, so I don’t personally care.

3. WLAN is MUCH more stable. Before, I had trouble using WLAN on my N95
because it would never consistently perform in my house. I have a
Linksys router with WEP key. Previously, my N95 only even detected the
network 70% of the time, and 50% of that time would either disconnect
randomly, or not even full connect at all. With this build, I have been
able to connect and remain connected consistently, with no troubles.
VERY pleased.

4. Camera - I don’t see a major difference in quality, but I didn’t
have any problems with this previously, either. Default sharpness
setting is Normal for all presets. If you change settings and exit the
camera app, it resets everything.

5. It still shows EVERY number as a mobile number in the Log app.

6. Testing with my roommate’s Moto S9, I am unable to get A2DP to work.
The N95 will connect to the headset, but then disconnect (sort of. It
shows the disconnected message and the BT icon shows it’s disconnected,
but if you go into the BT settings and try to manually connect, it says
it’s still connected. A regular BT headset works fine, as does BT to my
computer/keyboard.

7. Flash is still 2.0.

That’s all I can find thus far. If anyone has any other questions,
please put them here. I’ve closed comments on the other thread, to keep
things in one place.

  1. Are you sure tracking is still available? When you plan a route, have it shown on the map, are all three options there? (all three being Start -Simulation, -Tracking, and -Navigation)

I will GIVE UP ON NOKIA if they black ball me like this and I will buy seven iPhones! SEVEN!

  2. Ricky, listen, I am NOT going to look at the screenshot you posted to answer my question. I want you to TELL ME as if I were blind…

    :embarrassed:

  3. Hi,
GPS is improved WITHOUT to use A-GPS?
    Audio quality is improved?
    Battery life is improved?
    Thank you.

  4. Battery life can be fixed if you turn off everything!..Like

Wireless lan searching- change to ”never” only use it when you actually use it.
GPS positioning methods- turn it off! only use it when you actually use it
    No Screensavers in the backround
And always make sure you closing all programs using handy taskman.
Your battery will last more than 1 day, trust me…maybe even up to 2 and half days.

And all this is tested since i had problems in the beginning! :)

  5. Regarding number 4, I understand that the sharpness is set to normal if using presets or the default settings.

what happens to the sharpness if the preset is changed? If one is NOT using the default but is using another mode instead - like macro or portrait or sports mode. Will the sharpness go to maximum sharpness again? Or has this been fixed?

  6. Since you have the privilege to have this update v12.0.013 to test out, I assume that you will provide feedback to Nokia. I hope that you can and will take all our recommendations and things that are missing from this update and contact Nokia to add to its next firmware release or future releases. Thanks.

  7. Did you have the “#”-Shortcut that switches between the main- and the silence-profile prior to updating the firmware? If so, is it still available? Thanks for testing ;)

  8. The Euro firmwares all have the # (silent mode) working.

  9. Don’t forget to mention and have Nokia fix the “all-day” reocurring bug as well!!!

  10. Ok, let’s see….

    JohnnyBruha - no comment.

GPS, even without A-GPS enabled, was improved to 74 seconds after a fresh reboot. WAY better than before. Audio quality? I didn’t notice a problem previously, so I can’t say if it’s been improved. Battery life? It’s about the same. My usage varies so much I wouldn’t be able to give it a true test.

@dpapa - that defeats the entire purpose of the phone if you turn everything off. I’m able to easily get through the day, which is plenty for me.

@oneclick - that’s what I tested. I switched to each of the different profiles and they’re all set to normal sharpness.

    # key shortcut was and still is present.

  11. There is a real problem with java games. the speakervolume can’t be controlled while playing. the volume is so loud that it hurts the ears.
i hope they fixed this issue too.

  12. Has BT connectivity improved? I wasn´t able to pair my N95 with the BT Handsfree in my BMW Z4 Coupé with the last firmwares. I am really hoping that Nokia has changed the BT Stack to make connections to Handsfree-Profiles available…
    Any Ideas?

    Thanks and greetz.

  13. does the new firmware fix the real player streaming problem on the mobile youtube site? A lot of users including myself have had trouble getting it to work even via wi fi. We’ve tried changing our realplayer settings but its no use

  14. Hi,
good to hear WLAN improvements, I had the same problems with intermittent connection, not finding APs all the time. Also, usually, I found my laptop had ~25% more signal strength for same WLAN AP than N95 ? Is this better now ?
How about LEAP support for WEP EAP authentication ? My office WLAN uses this, so lack of LEAP prevents connecting …

    Regards,
    Ritesh

  15. @ Leonard - Thanks for the heads up! Dated the 22nd, when mine’s dated only a few days before! Dang, they’re working hard up there!!

  17. Hi all,

someone acan tell me when COME OUT THE the last FIRMWARE for my N95

  18. Please => Someone can tell me when COME OUT THE the last FIRMWARE for my N95.

  19. For Ricky Cadden. I read your post. My map application was doing the same thing. It is something with the settings. To fix: restore phone to factory original settings. There is a place in the phone for that. I forget where it is exactly. Restart phone. Connect to computer and load the firmware update 11 something. If you already have that one, reinstall it. Restart phone. The map application will start now. If you saved your previous settings with nokia software, DO NOT reload them or you will have to do everything again. That fixed mine and I haven’t had a problem since.

  20. Sorry previous not for Ricky, its for Riesgo77.

  21. From the phones setings can you tell us the URL of the A-GPS server?

  22. Is the firmware out yet? I’m still waiting on my n95 to come through the mail!

  23. Just noticied the 12.0.xxx release is availlable from Nokia Updater. Gonna go to give a try…

  24. Can you tell me wich code product do you have to get this new firmware ? it is written behind the battery…

  25. USB mode is greatly improved. Previously the USB comms would stall for several seconds every time a file was added or deleted; now, deleting huge directories are almost instant.

  26. How do you get this new firmware? I tried the “Nokia Software Updater” from nokia.com, but it won’t allow me to upgrade to version 12. Is there a specific website to go? or other instructions on how to obtain it? Thanks!

  27. 0537611, among others, works to receive the upgrade. I’ve heard the same about Scandinavian codes. If you want to stay “official,” I’m sure the firmware will be available soon enough. Anyway, AGPS works great (I also can get “locks” indoors), and menu speeds are vastly improved. Opera Mini is downright speedy at bringing up dialog boxes.

  28. Code 0536063 works fine (France - Europe)

  29. Hey guys. I have updated the firmware, but i could not find the A-GPS funktion in the maps programe. So i searched the net, and found out that there was a new maps programe out there. Found and installed that new maps programe. And i do see improvements, but i still cant find the A-GPS option? Where is that funktion located? Anyone? :)
    Thanks in advance

  30. –> tools –> settings –> général (in french, sorry) –> positionnement (still in French…) –> méthode de positionnement –> A-GPS

  31. I’ve heard about all the good things about this new firmware, can anybody tell me whether they have problems with keys in it? After I updated the firmware I have a little problem. While doing something on the phone, typing sms’s, going through phone functions I see that sometimes a keypress doesn’t do anything, and it doesn’t matter which key I press. I turned on the key beeps to see what happens and I saw that when the key is pressed an there should be a response and also a beep there is nothing. When I press again it works, the previous firmware had hickups like this but the keypress always did something even if it lagged, after a little lag it would do it’s function. It looks as if the phone has from time to time problems with the keyboard controller.

Any one can help? How to give Nokia a sign about this? I think that I’ll sell this phone, Nokia phones are getting worse and worse

  32. hi - whenever I try the “Step 2/2: Find the latest version available for your phone” for *any* of the

    http://europe.nokia.com/A4305060

    I see this:

    Version: 11.0.026

Is there some reason that I am not able to see the latest firmware? Geolocation?

I’m in Australia - has anyone from Australia managed to get up to a firmware version of 12.x.x.x?

My wireless performance is shocking, drops out within seconds of getting online and locks the phone up. Getting close to demanding a refund.
    :(

  33. Same for me, it shows 11.0.026 as the most up-to-date firmware for my product code (0547713, Austria)

Does anyone know why? My N95 is a “N95-1, Type “RM-159″ - are yours the same?

  34. I just updated my firmware to the new V12.0.013 on July 6th and it works fine so far, but I don’t really see any changes at all O.o
Something has probably changed, but nothing noticable really.
Still no filter for the noise the headset makes ><
My phone has product code 0534847.

  35. Firstly..
@dan I am in perth have just downloaded the new firmware with nokia software updater at http://www.nokia.com.au/nokia/0,1522,,00.html?orig=/softwareupdate
IT FIXED MY WLAN locking up, the same prob your having.

Just wanted to share my experience with the new firmware. It has fixed all the major problems that i had previously (v10 & v11). Problems included poor WLAN support, at work it would keep dropping out then the WLAN would freeze while at full power so the phone whould need to be restarted about 5 times a day and charged twice a day. Voice tag calling, on some names it would be fine other names the phone would crash and restart itself. GPS, just slow to get sat info. BUT with the NEW v12 Firmware all of these problems have gone! YAY!

  36. hey,

i just read so many things about the update. Now i would like to know how to get it. with NSU it says my aktual version (11.0.026)is the newest.

can anybody tell me how to get the new one.

    thx
    teddfan
