N95 vs. iPhone - MMS

Introducing a 6-part series of N95 vs. iPhone commercials, brought to you by Symbian-Guru.com and IntoMobile.com. Stefan and I were thinking, and decided that someone needed to make some commercials really exposing the iPhone for what it’s NOT. So we came up with these. There’s 6, one for each day leading up to the much-anticipated launch of the Apple iPhone. Seeing as how the iPhone will officially be available at 6pm (local time, apparently), each of these commercials will go live at 6pm each day (CST).

Hopefully you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed making them. If you’re interested in the Nokia N95, you can purchase it here or here. I’d strongly suggest it.

Please also note that these are not intended to spark any huge argument or say that one is better than the other. They’re just here for your enjoyment in a world gone mad.

  1. Lol! Awesome!!!
Can’t wait to see the other 5.

  2. well done…

  3. cant wait to go home and watch this!

  4. It’s not the n95, but here’s a video on some alternatives…http://thenewsroom.com/details/428470?c_id=wom-bc-js

  5. This is GREAT! I’m looking forward to the rest of these. :)
If only Nokia marketing were taking advantage of this opportunity to a) promote their products and b) let people know that they don’t have to tie themselves to a carrier to get a cool phone. It’s sad when the marketing lags behind the quality of the product (usually, it’s the other way around).

  6. Hilarious. That was awesome! Very clever. I can’t wait for the rest.

  7. It is sort of odd to see so many Symbian fans reacting so negatively towards the iPhone. I think the biggest threat to Nokia / Symbian phones at the moment is simply their own bad software design.

I am (or should I say ‘have been’) a huge Symbian fan for years. I have converted many friends to Symbian OS. I have owned a 6620, 6682 and currently own a N73. I have to tell you, while each phone has added features, overall reliability has tanked. My 6620 was an indestructable, totally realiable, tank of a phone. My N73 is a sluggish, buggy piece of garbage (I have returned it twice, I am on my third). Starting with the 6682 my phones have started to freeze up, slow down and require rebooting. On my n73, half of the time when I slide open the lens cover I am just stuck looking at the wallpaper. It should just work. As a phone, as a camera, as a music player. I am paying a premium for a phone that has these features integrated. I never need to ‘reboot’ my camera, mp3 player or ‘non-smart phone. Overall I am really disappointed.

It seems that Nokia should easily be able to, not only make a better phone than the iPhone, they should be able to make a better phone than the crap they are currently producing. How many years have they been in the game? How many billions of phones? They question should be, ‘why hasn’t nokia captured the public imagination like apple has? They certainly have the money to market the n95 the same way, if they chose to. Apple doesnt really offer any features you cant get on competing phones, they are just making a case to the common consumer (like my girlfriend) about what a phone should be able to do. I say it is Nokia’s fault if they have not been able to (or chosen to) do this in the past. You could argue that they could easily market the N95 as a jesus phone. Why didn’t they? Why get mad at Apple for doing it (the marketing) better?

I think the problem is - and again, I have been a huge Sybian fan - is that they just aren’t innovating. They got lazy and sloppy. Hopefully the iPhone will kick them in the pants and make them innovate and design something better.

In the meantime, it is disappointing to see my favorite Symbian sites act bent out of shape by the iPhone. Who cares? Nokia should make something simple and elegant too.

My next phone wont be an iPhone, but it wont be a Symbian phone either. I just want a regular phone, with a good camera that does not freeze or need rebooting. I will use Gmail mobile for my mail and be done with smart phones - all of them - until they are smart enough to work all the time.

    My 2¢

  8. Michael - thanks for your commentary. Honestly, I don’t have a big problem with the iPhone. You should read my other post regarding it. I DO have a problem with the media making a huge deal out of it, as if everything (YouTube, ETF, etc) is specifically for this “jesus phone.” Sure it’s different from what’s out there now, but it’s not revolutionary by any measure.

Honestly, I’d like one to play with. I personally haven’t had the issues that you have with your N73 (do you have the latest firmware on it?) and would honestly recommend the N73 as the best Symbian phone overall on the market currently. However, I fully believe you that you’ve had issues. There’s some fundamental things that Nokia/S60 has overlooked with the recent crop of S60 devices, namely RAM.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t all poke some fun here and there. I assure you, if I could walk into a store (and not have to campout) I would be buying an iPhone on Friday just like the rest of the country (I’d be returning it within a few weeks, I just want to play with and experience it). There’s some fundamental problems that I have with it, as well. The first is touch, I simply don’t like touchscreens. I’ve tried them several times and just say no. And the 2MP cam. After the N73 and N95, there’s no way in hell you could put a 2MP cam in my hand and expect me to be even remotely satisfied.

Also, I don’t see the iPhone as competition for Nokia. They’re clearly going after entirely different market segments. I think that the iPhone, however, IS going to appeal to certain people, but, like myself, they will not want it for one reason or another, but will start shopping around, now knowing what they DO want. Those are the people whom Nokia should be targeting.

  9. GREAT! This should be one of Nokia’s commercial :] u guys r like pros. i want to c moreee, theyre funny

  10. I get a better idea of where you are coming from. I guess we just maybe differ on the current state of affairs with nokia/symbian. I don’t think they are ‘bringing much to the table’ as of late. You must know the pain of ‘out of memory’ errors, sluggish lag on the OS.

I dont have the current firmware. Unfortunately, in the US, the software is windows only, and that’s not me. I can tell you the reason I returned my first N73 was audio feedback in video mode (quiet environments it actually sounds sort of like a tape drive - even though there are no moving parts). I was sure it was a defect until I opened four N73 boxes that all had the same problem.

I thought about getting the N75, but cingular overbranded it (ruined the mail app, etc) and it is a bit chunky for what it offers. Unlocked it is overpriced and not a real ‘upgrade’ from what I have with the 73 The N76 seems nice, but I feel burned on Symbian at this point and feel like it will be a sluggish wart like my n73. I thought about the n95, but I have the same fear and I think my next $600 phone needs to be 3G in the US (iPhone missed the boat here too.) I am a guy who will spend the money for the right phone. There is just not a right phone out there at the moment (in my opinion).

As for touchscreens. I hate them too. I had a Treo and it was the worst part of the phone. The must useful feature was the dpad just like the most useful navigator on the N73 is the joystick. I think it was a huge mistake on Apple’s part to not have any buttons. You need to sometimes operate a phone off of finger memory.

I will say this. My N73 has convinced me that every phone from here out must have the following:

Good camera - I use it a lot. I am spoiled.
Usable video - Qvga or better. - Spoiled here too.
    FM Radio
Email - I have been testing GMAIL (java app) in preparation for giving up symbian and it is fine. You can customize Gmail to check any popmail account.

Having said that. As of now, I am looking to Sony and their ‘un-smart’ phones like the revision to the w810 (which my girlfriend has) because it seems to just work, all the time. With better video and 3G, I think I could live with it.

The criticisms about the iPhone are the same types of criticisms that Apple always gets. People who know tech hate them for overhyping and always claiming to have invented the wheel. It happened on the iMac, the iPod, every new product they release. The truth is they are great at marketing, but more than that, they refine and innovate. They are like the teacher’s pet who makes everyone work harder. All phones will benefit from the overhyping apple is doing. They are growing the market of premium phones. Just like with the iPod which had no great ‘new’ features when it was released, the iPhone will fire up the industry and make them work harder. The people who benefit from that are you and I.

As for MMS. I know you were joking, but there is a good parallel here. When they released the iMac, everyone screamed from the rooftops that it wasn’t a real computer because it didn’t have a floppy drive. I remember well. Tech guys went on for days about how stupid it was to do that. It was also USB only - no more serial or ADB connectors. The point is, Apple said, ‘hey, a floppy holds a meg, either email it, or burn it to a CD with other stuff’. MMS is similar. They are saying all phone should have email. We are giving up on MMS cause it does the same thing but with fewer options. Now, that will piss a lot of people off. Just like the floppy drive. They don’t care. You wont either in a few years because MMS will be gone.

Hopefully, what we will gain from that is new features on all of our phones. New contracts between the manufacturers and the carriers that stop crippling and over-branding phones. Better peripherals. Maybe even lower data plans if everyone starts competing for customers. All of that will be because Apple shook things up. Not because the iPhone is good or bad, but because they didn’t settle. That’s why I wrote my first post. I am surprised at how much people are hating on them when, in the end, guys like you and I who love phones will benefit the most from all of the work they are doing.

I say more hype more commercials, more lines. If everyone gets into feature rich phones, maybe the US wont be behind the rest of the phone world any more.

  11. This is very funny. You guys did a great job! Can’t wait to see the rest!

  12. This is very funny. You guys did a great job! Can’t wait to see the rest!

  13. Great video guys! - I look forward to the others ;-)

  14. Very funny…I can think of a few more scenarios (iPhone with no battery, N95 just pops a new battery in / N95 streaming music wirelessly, iPhone getting tangled in cords / iPhone trying to use Google Maps to navigate but can’t start because he doesn’t know where he is RIGHT NOW…N95 is like “Oh…you don’t have GPS)

    Keep ‘em coming.

  15. Michael,

I largely agree. S60 could be better. One thing I just desperately long for is not having to confirm every action (”do you really want to delete this SMS?”). Can they not have “do not show this message again”, and then a trash folder from which it could be recovered, or, even better a good “undo” function. If the N-Series really is supposed to be Multimedia Computers, they should be able to program that in. Ah how sweet it would be if the phone trusted I know what I am doing (but would forgive if I didn’t and let me undo) :)
With regard to your next phone, if you can wait, I would recommend you take a look at the Nokia 6500 Slide. Looks great. Mobile-Review has a _P_review up in Russian, should be up in English soon.

  16. Great video.
The N95 is the best phone…iPhone suxx.

  17. Michael…about the analogy about MMS and floppy drives:

Back when Apple decided to drop floppy drives from their computers, it was seen as a shocker, and eventually the floppy died, but I don’t think the MMS situation is the same. MMS is not just going to go away because Apple says so. There are so many people out there with mobiles…so much more than have ever even SEEN a macintosh, and almost every one of these mobiles (with the exception of the very oldest) can send MMS. I guarantee you will see some confused looks on people’s faces when someone takes a picture and tries to send it as a message, only to find out that their friend can’t get it because they a) their phone doesn’t get email b) the receiving operator blocks emails for some reason c) some other technical detail I don’t know about. This person will look at the iPhone and wonder “why the hell did they leave that out?”…not “Oh yeah…my phone is SOOO much more advanced than yours…it can’t be bothered with mundane MMS”.

Mobile phones are devices that almost EVERYONE uses, Apple computers have always been a niche product. If Apple wants to toy around with their little corner of the market (Macs) they can do so without effecting very many people, the mac faithful will see it as “innovation” and move on, this will not be so with the huge market for mobile phones. I have a sense that Apple will try one too many of these “innovations” and people will see and grow tired of that famous Apple hubris.

  18. Craig: Thanks for the tip on the 6500. That’s a solid recommendation.

As for MMS. I don’t know what else to say. Your point is a perfect example of an argument made in defense of the floppy. Every computer on the planet had them. Millions of computers needed them for vital functions (software restore, etc). Even with that. Apple ditched them. It made no sense at the time and forced the user to be inconvenienced daily. If you weren’t on a network and didn’t have a cd Burner you were screwed. You only option was to BUY an external floppy drive (which i did - and I was pissed). I am not saying that I am defending their position. It does not benefit me if a phone loses this function. I am just trying to show a pattern. Calling it hubris is fair (that’s why I said ‘they don’t care). I am just giving a heads up about the shift and how funny this commercial will seem (for different reasons- in three years). There were much more passionate defenses of the floppy drive, believe me. PCs were devices that everyone uses. Calling Apple computers niche is still parallel. Your point about ‘toying around’ and Mac faithful serves my original argument. All of the same arguments made about the floppy. People with the iPhone will feel that their friends dont have a ‘good phone’ because they cant get email with a picture. And so begins a market shift…

    SMS=Chat / Email=Email / MMS =?

As for the “mac faithful”, I am a soon to be ex-apple user. While i like the OS, I am really frustrated with the lack of options in hardware. Now that Windows is better, the switch wont be as painful. So don’t think I am blindly defending them. I am sort of sick of them.

Having said that, MMS will be gone. People replace phones and will, over the next couple of years want more features - like you and I enjoy. I doesn’t matter that it is starting on a niche product. Many phones will be ‘backward compatible’ for MMS just like PC computers kept shipping for years with floppy drives. The point is, this phone starts a shift. And in a couple of years it will be seen as having ‘vision’. And naysayers will say ‘oh it was obvious’. And Apple with be hyping something ‘new’ and people will hate it and make commercials that make fun of it. And so on and so on.

When is the last time you used your floppy?

  19. Unfortunately, it appears that the iPhone does, in fact, have video out through the headphones and / or the dock, just like other iPods. So, nice try, but one of the things you’re busting on the iPhone about, it is believed that it actually does (of course, nobody knows for certain yet).

Having said that, I think that the N95 is a nice phone, although the 3G goodness is basically wasted here in the USA (and the 3.5G is TOTALLY wasted here). I agree wholeheartedly with the earlier poster - Nokia has sold how many handsets? By this time, they (or LG, or Samsung, or Sony, or Motorola, or…) could have put together a brilliant phone / web browser / music player / Veg-o-matic, ten times over - but they haven’t. So, we’ve all had to suffer with inferior devices. Thanks, Apple, for saving me from having to buy yet another crappy phone.

  20. iPhone bitches!

  21. Frankly, the lack of MMS doesn’t bother me in the slightest. How often do you really use it? Also, you have to look deeper at what the iPhone is doing. You’re *supposed* to sync it with iSync. That means that all your contacts are in there, whom you (hopefully) have an email address for, as well. And it has email integrated. Just like it should be. Basically, the iPhone is doing for mainstream what smartphones have been doing for a while. Deleting the phone number from the equation. Why do I need a phone number? Why not just one “thing” to reach me anywhere - email, IM, SMS, voice, etc? It just finds me wherever (or I can view/receive it wherever).

Think about it. Why would you want MMS (with size and attachment limitations) if you both have email on your device?

  22. That’s great! I can’t wait to see the rest…how many bogus email accounts are you guys using to promote this sad nerdfest? That Nokia N95 looks about as cool as a home-made DOS PC! Wow! Seriously, did the rejects is Mr Softy’s geek lab design the interface and ugly exterior…or was there even a designer? or just some guys in the engineering lab picking the case and some buttons they had laying around? Just wondering…

  23. The above comment is one more reason more and more people hate Apple.

  24. I don’t know why everyone has to attack the iPhone. If they are so happy with their cell phones and so sure they are the best, why worry? Let the people who love the iPhone and Apple stuff love it, and those that love Nokia or Microsoft or Sony or LG or whatever, love what they like. There is plenty of room for more than one phone.

  25. I love that even with a disclaimer, people are taking these WAY too seriously. I mean, really, does no one have a sense of humor about the iPhone? Can iPhone fanboys really not take a step back and acknowledge that some of the features are pretty lackluster?

  26. Cool video, when will it appear on tv? Love it.

  27. Did you know that you can send a MMS to an email account? well I did in like 4 years ago. So “old-school” MMS users can send their messages to their iPone friend’s e-mail adress instead.

  28. Free discussion of products made for users is always looked upon by the creators of those devices. It allows the consumer to relay back input on the device in a manner in which they need not feel any kind of pressure from the creator of the device to express only the positive points and fail to provide the negatives as well. However when free discussion comes to the point of unfruitful name calling and petty bickering what is the point? If you have a point that is relevant and can produce throught provoking conversation then make it. If not your opinion is irrelevant to the topic at hand and should be kept to yourself for your own benefit; as spouting off irregardless of which side you are on only shows how asinine (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/asinine {for those of you who dont know what ‘asinine’ means}) you are. Each of us is entitled to an opinion, but only when you have all of the facts, if you do not understand every technical aspect of what you are discussing then you are not entitled. Entitlement is earned through knowledge not assumption and ignorance. Of all of the posts in this thread only 4 are worth the time that it took to type the message, load the page and read, the rest are nothing more than useless nonsense. Now for my point regarding the topic at hand…

iPhone does not have (I will not say lack) some features that are on other devices, what must be taken into consideration is that there is no device out there that can do everything perfectly and has all features that everyone believes should be on the device. Nokia makes some very good devices so does HTC, Sony, etc… each person is gratified by thier choice to purchase whatever device they choose. If a device was created that was capable of doing everything that everyone wanted then would be a miracle, as the human race cant agree even on the most simple of ideas, coexistance and peace.

I ran across this because I was wanting to find the best way to share mms with iPhone. It saddens me that I cant type the word iPhone in a search without finding the same war going on with a phone as what goes on between “PC” and “Mac” users. I feel that the platform that I choose to use is my business, I feel its better if I didnt then I would not have selected it. But I do not try to bash the other platform just because I don’t have it as my preferred platform. If someone was able to show me in a rational and logical way that the other platform was better then I would change. We all make decisions based on perception and not on fact and reality, its time we wake up and put our petty differences aside and be productive in our discussions instead of acting like 4 year old children.

You see even the creators of this video are ignorant(without knowledge), as you can email the photo from the phone, not as the video dictates “I can email them later when I get home”. Secondly stupidity can cause great detrement as I know the creators of this video did not get Apple’s permission to use their music, represent the product, or the company, nor did they get permission from Nokia. That is the difference between ignorance and stupidity, neither is a valid excuse in court when you get sued for copyright abuse, misrepresentation, false advertising, etc… As an interested party of one of the two companies I will be sure to forward all of this material to the legal team.

So you see my point on thinkng before you speak, obviously the video creators didnt, and now they look asinine.

  29. Matt - thanks for the…interesting….commentary. First, the legal aspects noted towards the end. It’s not Apple’s music, it’s a song by an artist named Orba Squara.

As to the rest of the commentary, frankly, these videos were not intended as an attack on the iPhone. I’ve stated numerous times on this and other sites that I think the iPhone has done and will do fantastic things to the mobile industry; things that should have been done by the big players like Nokia and Motorola ages ago, and that I have been requesting for a long time.

These videos were intended to break through the hype that the iPhone is the “jesus phone” or “uber phone” and point out the things that it doesn’t do that other phones DO. If anything, it was an attempt (and trust me, it wasn’t taken very seriously by either me or Stefan, at any point) to market the N95, since Nokia very obviously hasn’t been doing it at all, at least in the country in which we live.

You’re right, you absolutely have the full right to choose whatever platform you wish, and good for whatever you choose. However, I also have the right to offer up facts (as I know them at the time). At the time of these recordings, the iPhone was unreleased, and therefore, all that was known was that it lacked MMS. It was not known that it could email with attachments.

Anyways, thanks for reading, and I sincerely hope that you enjoy your iPhone, if that’s what you purchase. I would also highly suggest visiting Jonathan Greene’s blog, Atmaspheric Endeavors (www.atmasphere.net/wp) as he’s doing some great explorations and walkthroughs with the iPhone that he purchased.

If you find yourself in the EMERGENCY situation where you need to make a call and do not have access to a charger and your battery is dead, you can just replace the battery with a spare. With the iPhone you could be stuck off the side of a cliff in a car with no power and trapped. Unfortunately, Apple seemed to overlook this MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE OF HAVING A CELL PHONE IN THE FIRST PLACE. EMERGENCYS!!! I would actually be willing to get my wife this phone if it were not for this issue.

    Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)
    IPhone - None
Nokia N95 - Excellent on board chip for hardware decoding of video and 3D games. Supports DirectX and OpenGL. Stunning game playback on the phone or your TV that the most hard core XBOX/PS# games are impressed with.

I could add to this list for hours. Many of these applications are free. Most of these programs are well written and feature rich. These are not trivial little tidy bits. If you really want a smart phone, it has to be smart enough to know that it will not do everything out of the box and some things should be left to outside programmers to develop. The iPhone ’s application list is not even a bad joke compared to the N95. The problem with comparing the two is that it takes months just to get a handle on the capabilities of an N95. Most N95 users do not take the time to respond to such comparisons, as the comparison is not only foolish, but requires quite a bit of time to accurately list the N95’s capabilities.

  31. Looks like nokia paid you for writing this.
Neways if someone is boring enough to dislike the iPhone, then there is a simple solution..DONT BUY IT..
