S60 + nuTsie = iTunes on the go

Before I left for Chicago, I found a new app called nuTsie. It’s a java app that installs on your phone, and then you login to their website, nuTsie.com. Once in, you export your iTunes library (note this only exports an xml file with the song information, not the actual music files) and give them some time to analyze. My entire library which is about 5k, and only took about an hour to log.

Once that’s done, you can pull up nuTsie on your phone (**be
aware this uses data and streaming, so it’s best to have an unlimited
data bucket. Neither nuTsie nor Symbian-Guru can be responsible if you
get a big bill from your carrier**) and you’re able to pull up all of
your iTunes playlists and stream them.

I found the performance to be excellent. Streaming on my N95
over EDGE there was a few seconds of buffering to get the stream
started, but soon I was jamming away, with no buffering during
playback. I also tested a few things and found that, unlike Spodtronic,
nuTsie can be "backgrounded” so that you can do other things
will listening to your music. I was able to use nuTsie over EDGE while
cruising down the freeway at 70 mph with no buffering, which is
impressive.

You can also, via the website, share your playlists with others, and check out other people’s playlists. I think this is the coolest feature, personally. Soon, apparently, you’ll be able to do it on the mobile device, as well. Think about this for a second. It’s a java app, which means pretty much any phone, and it streams, so you don’t need memory to use it. This is REALLY cool for sharing music with people.

The way nuTsie works is that they have a database of songs on
their server. By uploading your library’s xml file, you are basically
telling them which songs you already own (though it worked with most of
my library, which is all ripped from CDs) and they stream those to you.
In that way, nuTsie has basically setup an internet radio broadcasting system that broadcasts your music to you. This way the artist still gets paid royalties. they avoid having to pay royalties and other RIAA legality
issues.
Also, because they’re basically syncing your library with
theirs, your computer does NOT have to be on in order for you to enjoy
nuTsie! Pretty clever.

There are obviously a few limitations with the service.
There’s no way to browse your library, so you’re reliant upon the
playlists you’ve got already setup. Also, the playlists are
automatically on shuffle, with no way to change that. And if you add or
change your playlist (for instance, a smart playlist) you have to
re-export and upload your library file. Thankfully this is a quick
process. Also, the site won’t open properly in Firefox for me. However,
using IE or IEtab works just fine.

So if you’ve got an unlimited data package, a phone that will
run java apps (which means it’s not limited to just S60), and alot of
fun playlists in iTunes, then nuTsie is for you. Go ahead, go nuTsie!
(sorry, I had to.)

What are your thoughts on the app? What features would you like to see added in the future?

EDIT** - I also just found these 2 videos on their blog, FREAKIN HILARIOUS.

  1. Just wanted to clarify something in your piece. Since we are following radio rules, we are responsible for artist royalties, etc. Artist’s rights are very important to us and I simply wanted to clear up any confusion that might arise.

Looks like these guys thought it all over - streaming, royalties, convergence, and even marketing (yes, I agree, those clips are hilarious!). Great job!

  5. love this app btw

  6. Hello Everybody,

Want to let everyone know about some of the recent updates to the service. You can now share playlists with friends and take a look and listen at other’s playlists. These playlists will show up in your account online as well as when used on your mobile. We are extremely excited about this great new feature and feel that you will be too. We are also continuing to increase our compatibility with more mobile devices.

    Thanks,

    “Free You’re iTunes” Go nuTsie!

  7. You’re shittin’ me!

    ROFL hilarious

  8. From what I understand, nuTsie needs to own the music you own in order to stream it to your phone. That means that I don’t have to bother trying out the application since I want to listen to the lesser known salsa songs that I own.
