A New Feed and Other Site Changes

I’ve made a few changes to the site, detailed below. Over the next few months, there will be more changes coming, including an all-new mobile-oriented interface, so get excited. I know it seems things are slow to change on Symbian-Guru, but I’m working on this site in my "spare" time, aside from a regular 8-5 job. Also, anything having to do with the design of the site, I haven’t a clue how to do it, so I have to decide what I want, figure out how to do it, then LEARN how to do it, then trial-and-error till it looks how I want it. EXTREMELY time consuming.
But fun. I get so much enjoyment out of this site and everyone’s comments and whatnot. So thanks and keep it up! Click through for the meat.
1. Added the 3Jam SMS box on the sidebar. It’s really cool cause you
can text me without having to give me your mobile number, and I can
respond without giving you mine. As far as I know, they all count as
local, as well, which is cool. It’s been up for a while and I’ve
already had some great conversations with readers. Thanks also for not
using it for Spam. I’ve only gotten a few texts that were nonsense,
which is expected. But please feel free to use it anytime. I’m usually
answering within a few minutes
2. FINALLY fixed the redirect for Symbian-Guru.com (without the www.) Sorry it took so long.
3. I’ve been making some behind-the-scene changes to try to help it
load better in a mobile browser. One big thing is limiting the
multimedia that’s on the front page (videos, Flickr slideshow, etc). So
you’ll find that (other than DWTG videos) I’m putting that stuff on the
"Click to read more" page.
4. Driving With The Guru videos - they’re not going to be on Viddler
anymore, so you won’t be able to comment through the video. I hate
that, too, but Viddler just isn’t convenient. Blip is, at least moreso.
And as soon as I can find an FTP client for my N800, it’ll be even MORE
convenient.
5. There’s a new feed button over there for videos. Currently, it gives
you all of my Blip.tv videos, which includes Driving With The Guru. I’m
working on a way to somehow give you 2 feeds, one for JUST DWTG and one
for everything else. You can subscribe to this in the Nokia Podcasting
App, and you can also view any of the videos on any S60v3 device, even
if it says you can’t. I’ve tested.
Things coming down the line:
1. Official Symbian-Guru theme. You can see some screenshots in the
TalkPlus post. Currently it only displays correctly on the N95. When
it’s ready for all devices, I’ll be sure to post it for you to
download. It’s being created by Zach at Symbian In Motion, so you know
it’ll be good.
2. Mobile-oriented site. Right now, you can go to m.symbian-guru.com
and get the Winksite. It’s ok, but not exactly what I’m looking for, so
I’ll be tweaking. To do this, I have to learn how, so it’s going to
take a little bit.
3. Several people have requested a regular podcast with me, Stefan, and
Darla. We’re talking to figure out the logistics, so stay tuned.
4. I’m working on more content for the DWTG videos. If you have
anything you’d like for me to talk about or explore, please email me
with DWTG in the subject line. Still working on changing up the setup
to prevent the jostling of the camera.

Hi Ricky - Why was viddler not convenient for you? What were the features you were looking for that Viddler failed to offer?
What does blip offer that makes it more convenient. Just FTP uploading?
MobyExplorer ( http://www.bermin.net/mobyexplorer.html ) is an FTP-Client runnning on J2ME - so it should also do the job on your N800
About providing two feeds - well, you could still make the feeds manually and seperate the content of both however you wish.. There is a wide range of (freeware) windows/mac tools available.
Keep up the good work!
