This is the first episode of Driving with the Guru with the new format. As you can see, the camera shaking has been eliminated, and I’ve added a new segment called "What’s in my glovebox?" This segment won’t necessarily be in EVERY episode, but will be any time that I have any device or accessory to show off.
Click through to watch, and stay tuned for the next episode soon! As always, please leave any feedback, I’m anxious to hear what you have to say and try to make this better for you, the viewer.
Here it is, Driving With The Guru, Episode 12, and possibly the first one you’ve watched on your mobile device! Congrats! If you haven’t subscribed, you can use this link: http://feeds.symbian-guru.com/symbianguru/drivingwiththeguru to subscribe to the feed in iTunes or the Nokia Podcasting app, or wherever else you like to watch podcasts.
I’m really looking to expand these videos, and want some viewer feedback. Do you like the commentary (albeit with a bit more structure), or would you like to see some app demos, hardware reviews, etc?
I’m still toying (in my head) with how I want to groom the show, keeping with the "driving" theme, so keep an eye out for changes.
I know I just did an iPhone DWTG, but it was pointed out to me that I hadn’t even touched or seen one, and I was saying it’s not that cool. So I played with one. I spent 20 minutes with one at an AT&T store, and you’ll have to watch the video to see what I thought.
A little housekeeping: I’ve ditched Viddler for my DWTG videos. At least with Blip, I can *sorta* upload from the N800. And Blip gives me this handy little feed, so that you guys can subscribe on your Nokia Podcasting App. Yeah, that’s right, cool, huh? And the best part? It’s playable on any S60v3 device! Yeah, uh-huh. Try it.
Right now, you’re just going to get all my videos. Sorry. I’m experimenting with Blip to see if I can setup 2 different feeds based on tags, but who knows. In the meantime, enjoy!
Episode 9 of Driving with the Guru. Yes, I talk about the iPhone, but
it’s not a bashing, and it’s the only mention of it you’ll probably
find on my blog from here out. Also, I’m looking for some feedback for the Driving With The Guru videos, but you have to watch to find out what I mean. And, as always, it was completely filmed
and edited on the Nokia N95. (Even though I had to stupid move it to my PC to upload it cause all the current video uploading sites suck cause they have no mobile vision).
The Guru, aka Ricky Cadden, started Symbian-Guru.com in November 2006, out of his excitement for the S60 3rd Edition version of Symella. The Guru has used Symbian devices since the Nokia 6620, and is known for his perspective as a power user. You can follow The Guru on Twitter at @Rcadden

Nice thoughts about the iPhone and it’s impact on the industry – I completely agree that, THAT is the REAL revolution when it comes to the iPhone.
Have you tried recording without video-stabilizer on? – my experience is that it make the video MORE “wobly” then without using it, but I haven’t tried it in a car. Just a thought :-)

Serko
This is probably my favorite episode of “Driving with the Guru” so far!
Just wondering how you automatically assume that a lot of consumers will be returning their iPhones after two weeks of continuous use?
Have you even seen one in person yet (let alone used it yourself for two weeks?)
Good luck with your E90 pursuit though.

@Peter – actually, that was taken without Video Stabilizer on. I didn’t really notice a difference.
@Richard – it’s 10, sorry bout that. I don’t know why, but I have the WORST trouble remembering which episode is which. You’ll notice the base video is labeled 9. But it’s 10. I promise.
@Serko – I personally think that after the hype wears off and people use it extensively, the touch will get annoying, and the “little” things that seem to fade into the glow of “The iPhone” will start to glare a little brighter. That’s been my experience with the hundreds of phones I’ve played with. They’re cool at first, but then when I really start using them, the little things that I thought I could overlook, I can’t. N75 is the perfect example.

Ricky, I just posted this on scobelizer.com, but feel (some of) its appropriate to share here…
Subject: upload videos to youtube
Here’s how I do it… Open browser, goto youtube.com, assuming you’re logged in goto upload videos tab, fill in description, hit next, hit upload video, browse memory card, choose the file, hit upload.
AND THIS PART IS VERY IMPORTANT>>>
To make it easier next time, just add your youtube upload page as a bookmark, then add that bookmark to your N95’s homescreen… Then you just click that icon and away you go…
Its shortcuts/customizations like that (btw), which make people LOVE S60…

Hi
I like your bolgs, both reading and watching them. I am currently using Nokia E70, but I am holding off from buying the E90, not until I check out the iMate Ultimate 7150. I would really like you to compare them and make my decision easy.

I don’t think the iPhone represents a sea change, at least in the price point of cell phones. There will always be high end mobile phones; but for one to have this sort of mass marked appeal?
I see that happening maybe once every two years.

Was looking forward to checking out the video.
Any idea how to get Flash 8 on an N73? (Don’t have Windows so I can’t run the Nokia software….)
For your N73, download the Nokia Podcasting app (linked above). Then you can subscribe using the link above, and download as a podcast. I know that’s an ugly way of doing it, but I’m still ironing out the kinks.
Also, when it pops up and says it’s not compatible, ignore that. It is. Another thing I’m working on.

yup i agree with you ricky. the iphone has that coolness factor to it but after using it for 30minutes at the store it wore off simply because been used to the N95 i felt like i was playing with another version of the video ipod. call quality was so so and keyboard didnt work for me since i have big fingers.

Guru, it doesn’t play on my crippled E62. Liked the video. You talked me down from wanting an iphone after reading Jonathan Greene’s review. (Steve Lichtfield should get some credit too!)

Hi Ricky,
Agree with a previous post comment – turn video stabilisation off, it can’t cope and makes the video way too jumpy!

I guess if you’re getting spam posts you’re in the big leagues Ricky! =)
Interloper – I often wonder why you read Symbian Guru, anyways. You’re an Apple fanboy, obviously. So go read Apple blogs.
I didn’t say I was qualified to judge the iPhone. But I did anyways. I wasn’t impressed. I don’t see how that makes me unethical.
The only reason I have to hate the iPhone is Apple fanboys, currently. Thanks for reading.

I was sceptical about iPhone too and thought it’s not such a big job.But when I went to the store and looked at it for just five minutes I realized I was totally wrong. This is an amazing phone and I bought one for myself too.
Cara – That’s awesome! Like I said, I’m sure there are people for whom it’s perfect. More than anything else, I’m glad that you’re 1. acknowledging that it’s ok to spend money on a phone sometimes and 2. going to enjoy what it feels like to have an unbranded phone, away from the filth that carriers put on them.
Drew
I know my comment is a little late but I wanted to get my 2 sense in before this subject is completely closed. I can only say this one way, I want both devices. The N95 is such a great device and now that I have the iPhone there are things that I miss. BUT, on the other hand, the iPhone is an amazing device and a joy to own and operate. I also feel like once the iPhone has an update under its belt(MMS, Mass Text Convo, Flash, widescreen Text input, dongle GPS) then it will be much more appealing to the power users. From what I have read it seems that many of the so called “iPhone killers” for powerusers are being addressed quickly.
