MailSpace - Online Mobile File Storage

The second application from the B.U.T.E.’s Dept. of A&I is MailSpace. MailSpace is a simple app that allows you to use your POP3 email account to store files from your mobile device. This is particularly useful if you have a large file limit such as with Gmail.

To use MailSpace, you need to have a POP3 email account setup in your device’s messaging application. MailSpace will use this to send out the files. Basically, the application sends a blank email to your POP3 account, and conveniently starts the subject line with "MailSpace" so it’s easy to setup a rule/filter.

There are three screens to the app. The first is the upload screen. Through here, you will browse your filesystem, select your files, and then click "Upload." Boom, it sends each file individually to your email account.

The second screen is the download screen. This allows you to browse the files that are already uploaded to your email account and either download them to your device or delete them from the server. I was unable to get this part of the application to work, but that could be cause I have a TON of files on my server already.

The last screen is the settings screen. In here you will designate which of your email accounts to use, and enter your credentials. Be sure to click "options" and then "save settings".

Yeah, you could probably do the same thing without the app, but it’s just so dead easy, and if you can get the download feature to work, it’s definitely incredibly useful. Was anyone able to get that part of the application to work?

  1. Hi!
I could not download the files either. Got Communication Error. Received the list of files though. Using Nokia E61i.

  2. you can do that also with gmail (and the gmail mobile jar file installed). on gmail you have gdocs so with the gmail app installed on the phone you can access your files you put there or the other way.

  3. Ivan - you can’t do this with the Gmail jar app because it doesn’t allow you to download those files to your device. You can only open and view them. This is handy because you can upload ANY file, and download it as well.

  4. I created a new folder where all my uploads will be stored, talking about Yahoo. But then you can not get the list to the mobile because it seems that it can only get the files from the Inbox folder at Yahoo. But of known reason that does’nt matter because the download anyway is not working. But a good backup though!
