Mobile Video Uploading - Part 2
I know I’ve ranted on this before, and I know that Stefan linked me to some java app that enables FTP transfer on my mobile, but that doesn’t solve the problem, really.
How come none of the online video-sharing sites seem to care about mobiles? WTF carries a video camera with them all the time? A precious few. How many carry a mobile phone? EVERYONE. Some people carry more than one.
So how come, YouTube, Blip, Viddler, and Vimeo, none of them have an interface for uploading via mobile?
How hard is it, really, to toss up an "m-dot" site with a simple upload
interface? It’s not difficult. All you need is a few text fields for
title, description, tags, and a browse/upload box. Bonus points for the
opportunity to auto-cross post to my blog.
Why do all these sites INSIST upon using crowded, congested, and
high-content uploading pages? Viddler won’t even load up on my N95 OR
my N800. YouTube, well, I hate YouTube. There, I said it. The interface
sucks, the quality sucks, I just hate it. Blip, now Blip I love. The
site is easy to tolerate, the videos look nice, the player is nice and
small, and I can add advertising (even though I have yet to make a
single penny from it). However, don’t bother trying to upload directly
from your phone.
And yes I know you can email videos in. Yes I know that I can post
directly to my site from Lifeblog, but seriously, a 5 minute video from
my N95 ends up being 70MB+. I don’t mind the data transfer, or the data
costs. I have an unlimited plan for a reason. But I want the ability to
DO it. Lifeblog craps out if you try to upload that big of a file. This
CAN’T be that hard, folks.
So here it is: The first video upload service with a USABLE method for
me to DIRECTLY upload a 70MB+ video from my handset to their service,
and cross-post on my Typepad blog, will get as much publicity as I can
possibly give them. Sounds dumb, but that’s all I’ve got. I find it
absurd that I can film and edit a video completely on my device, but
then still have to plug into my PC to upload and share said video. I
might as well just edit it on the PC!

Ricky - one thing you have to remember that we’re part of a very small majority that actually records high quality video on our phones. My guess is once iphone v2.0 comes out we’ll see you tube support mobile uploading.
You can always upload to YouTube via MMS with an N95.
Yet another feature that the pretty little iPhone lacks…
Ricky - Have u tried picostation? They support direct uploads from your mobile phone. I’ve used their player in the past, but i haven’t really uploaded stuff.
Their site seems to be down right now though.
Zach from Symbian in Motion had reviewed it a few months ago.
Movie digital lets you up load up to 1 gigabyte for free. And while there is no “offical” mobile interface to do so, they have an API we could use to just build one ourselves:

Also, keep an eye on this URL, I suspect exactly what you are asking for shall appear very soon:

Dude,
I record a vid and upload it to VOX.
Failing that - I record a vid then send it to YouTube via email.
(am I missing the point?)
You’re not necessarily missing the point. My question to you is how BIG are those videos? I don’t think it’s satisfactory if I have to record in a lesser quality just to be able to upload it. That defeats the purpose of the phone.
I’m experimenting with Yahoo Video, as well, at the suggestion of a reader. I’ve yet to check out the quality and UI and other factors.
Honestly, I really DON’T want to have to use YouTube, but it may come to that. Their web interface blows, in my opinion.
Man, you should really try that Vox one (http://www.vox.com/). I have been using it succesfully from the hospital with our new born baby to keep our eager grand parents updated
+ it’s installed on your n95 so very easy to set up.
