Core Player for Symbian OS - Aug 29th

Wow, Aug 29th is going to be one of the biggest days in S60 for a long while. Aside from the pending announcement of the Nokia N81, the presumed announcement of the 8GB Nokia N95, and the launch (or at least announcement) of the new Nokia Music Store, we’re also going to be getting the long-awaited Core Player for Symbian devices.
What is Core Player? Frankly, I don’t know. All I know is that converts from Winblows WindowsMobile and Palm have been wanting it on Symbian devices for a long, long time. There’s a pretty big thread over here at HowardForums discussing the app and why we care.
The consensus so far is that it brings all of the various media player options of S60 together in one, including video support, for which most of us veterans rely on Smartmovie from LonelyCatGames. The list of supported formats is pretty much every one that I’ve heard of, and even a couple that I haven’t.
Still, this blogger is skeptical that this is really the "jesus" app that I feel other S60 users think it is. To be honest, I’m skeptical *anytime* someone says that "this is the app you’ve all been waiting for" because usually I didn’t know I was waiting for it. In any case, here’s a handy little video showing it on the Nokia N80, along with the official announcement. Enjoy, and we’ll see.

Smart movie uses most of the same video codecs as the Core Player iirc. Most, but not all. I once compared the two on a treo 650. TCPMP played everything I threw at it, while smart movie had an issue with an avi file I downloaded off the net… can’t quite recall whether it was xvid or what. I currently use smart movie (infrequently) on my N80 and have no complaints, but I have to say, the core player shines when you take into account everything it supports, ie pretty much all media formats you can think of. This includes pictures, videos and music. Pictures and music aren’t such a big deal since S60 already does them so well, but playing random videos without having to worry about converting is the reason why the core player is such a big deal.
Wow. If they have cleaned up the UI, this could be very good news. Better still, if signed, and Nokia/SE are behind it, this could be very good news for all.
Interesting on the date, wonder if the announcement does have something to do with this. Maybe CorePlayer is the new media player to handle the new music/multimedia store. Would be a nice salvo for mobile media and open source software that’s for sure.
Like i said in the thread in HoFo that all i need is Divx mobile and Smart movie. I’m Good!
For the records:I was waiting for an app like this.
But $24.95 for a beta-version? No trial that let’s me check out, what I will get for my money? - I think I can wait a little longer…
