First Live Pics of the US 3G N95 - In Mocha!

Us3gn95_4
We all remember the news the other day, correct? About the US 3G N95 having a bigger battery, more RAM, and coming in black? Good, then you also remember that they redesigned the back of it to fit this montrous battery, and some eagle-eyed readers pointed out that it looked like they’d improved on the music buttons, as well. But there were some naysayers. "It’s fake", they said. Harumph.

My dear readers, Darla Mack and I present to you the first live pics of the US 3G N95. The first is of this redesigned backplate and camera area. You can see that they’ve removed the manual shutter and it looks like they actually recessed the camera, Us3gn95_2
instead of just flattening it to the back of the device.

The second picture shows these lifted media keys. Personally, I think they look better, but functionally, I didn’t have any issues with the current ones. Oh, well, never hurts to improve things a little, right? Notice also that it is still named simply N95, not N95i or anything like that. They also left the secondary camera which I’m a huge fan of, it’s great for MMS video clips.

The third picture shows the open back, which gives us more insight into how they crammed a bigger battery into this thing. It looks like they took that huge circle around the camera and reduced it drastically (obviously removing the manual shutter) and actually sunk it into the back of the phone a bit, for protection, no doubt. Then, if you look REAL close where the arrows are, you’ll see that it appears as though they shaved the thickness of the body down a little bit. This, in addition to moving the camera circle, allowed Nokia to squeeze a bit more space back there. Us3gn95_7

Personally, this leads me to believe that the bigger battery will NOT fit into the older devices. However, for whatever reason, you could obviously still fit the older battery into the newer device.

As always, keep it right here on the Symbian-Guru for the hottest news, but stick around for the great how-tos and other stuff, as well. :)

  1. Posts like this make those long nights of browsing well worth it.

  2. well they also changed the position of the led flash. now it is between the camera and battery.the led also seems bigger and to be made of clear glass. but the absence of the camera cover is a negative

  3. hi my friend did you tried the new battery for fit on the european version or is just a supposition it doesn’t fit? thank you!

  4. This is sad news. Was hoping that the Big batt would fit. :(

  5. Congrats on breaking this Ricky!! This is one hell of a whopper and I think many of us over at hofo were rolling our eyes a bit when you announced this what…?!?!….6 months ago!??

  6. haha. I think people who bought n95 earlier will be like..”WHAT?!” well not everyone but, I think Bruneian will. haha. Urm, is this phone will be available in other countries>

  7. Could the new flash be Xenon based instead of LED based?

  8. If you could swap covers the battery could be swapped too. I guess a special cover could come available for the older versions. Still the memory extension thing annoys me most. I feel cheated!

  9. nokia shud give some kind of exchange offer…exchange the old model for new one + some cash

  10. Nice update Ricky. I do wonder though if it should get a bit of a name update though. Just calling it an N95 does seem like a marketign snaffu, considering most in the US and abroad who already know of the N95. Maybe this will be one of the Internet Edition/Music edition themed models or something.

I like the recessed camera, looks a bit classier than camera-eey.

With the increase of RAM (and hopefully support for OTA firmware updating), I could see the N95 really capatilizing on the multimedia computer moniker.

  11. Well, after reading a bit on this topic I have following thoughts:

    1) Those in EU (and technically compatible markets), who bought the “classic” N95 and now are complaining about being cheated, should be not. When this “updated” N95 is available in US, in Europe Nokia will be already preparing for some totally new phone, which most likely will have both, the new battery and bigger RAM. So this is rather an update for US, so that that market is not totally neglected when some new phones are released in EU.

    2) Regarding the battery issue: the covers are not inter-changable between the “classic” and “updated” N95 — camera’s part is different in those phones (I wonder, has it been done on purpose?…). However, since it has already been shown that it is very easy to take off the back part of the “classic” N95’s shell, there is no reason for not having a new back part for the “classic” N95. Such that would fit the bigger camera ring, but also have enough room for the new battery (the “updated” N95 is several mm thicker, it is visible on the photos). It even does not have to be produced with Nokia’s blessing… After all it’s just a piece of plastics, no rocket technology needed to make it. Of course, this is true only if the BL-5F and BL-6F have the same electrical characteristics and differ only in size.

  12. Ricky you are great. Thanks a lot for info

  13. The batteries would not be interchangable because the new battery is obviously thicker, if only by a few millimeters. I also don’t think you could easily just swap the whole back cover, based on the change in design.

I think you’re pretty much SOL in terms of cramming this new battery into your old device.

I have to agree with kmk, though. I don’t see why the Euros are all pissed off, it’s not like you guys don’t get the best of every other Nokia on the market. Can’t let us catch a break once?

  14. Ricky, I think there are a lot more US N95 owners who are complaining (as far as I can tell e.g. on the Howardforums). Anyway, I absolutely agree: stop whining, this is the nature of the business, and there will be more goodies coming your way, hopefully more so also here in the US in the future! :)
Do you happen to know which one (the original or the US version) is thinner/thicker? There seems to be a bit of confusion on that going around in the various fora.

  15. Oh and some folks are speculating that the screen size has changed. Any comment on that?

  16. Any idea on release/availability?

  17. doh! so Ricky no chances to modify back cover for fit right? as on 6630 for bl-6c?
can you give us some shots about the two batteries?
many thanks for your work! :)

  18. Great find Ricky, i have to confess i was one of the non believers, But now ill be your biggest advocate, Once agian Great work To you and Darla.

  19. hey can ny one tell me where i can buy he new version n95 online
oh! yeah thnx a lot us jus saved me from buyin the old n95 version.

    this site rocks!

  20. Dang! I was hoping the new battery would fit on my current N95!

Oh well, can’t have it all.

P.s. the design looks pretty sweet, also I personally think it’s a good thing getting rid of the camera manual shutter, it was annoying when putting into your back jeans pocket.

Maybe they should have also got rid of the second slide, I don’t seem to use it that much..?

  21. mmmmmm…..this is for the american release right? im wondering if they have some simmilar update on their sleeves for the E90. whats your pick ricky?

    regards everyone.

    Luis S.

  22. Too bad I dont like sliders! :o (

  23. How can these be the first live pictures of the US N-95???

I’ve had some on my flickr http:www.flickr.com/photos/gisuser for several weeks now!

  24. Glenn, you have a US N95, but it has Euro 3G (2100 band) which is useless in the US. Thus, the fastest data transfer (WiFi aside) is EDGE. This model has US 3G HSDPA on the 850/1900 bands, which is ~10x faster than EDGE.

  25. Only this N95 was relased in the US? (or was the “classic” one before?)

I want to know: if I go to the US now, and buy a N95, will it be this new? All the Nokia N95 in the US are now that? Or there is a chance to be the “classic”?

    Thanks! :)

  26. does anyone know if this is coming out soon? and where did they get these pictures of the phones?

  27. *lol* no camera cover - probably some retarded redneck swallowed it while being on moonshine, died from suffocation and his family sued Nokia.

  28. @ Ed - this phone is not available yet. It is planned to be announced and launched in September sometime. Any N95 that you can purchase right now will not have the correct frequencies for HSDPA in the United States. You will still be able to use it, just not with the super-fast 3G cellular network.

As for the batteries fitting, I don’t think you’ll be able to sneak the new battery into the older devices, unfortunately, and I don’t see a way to retrofit them, specially since the camera module has been changed.

I believe the screensize is the same.

  29. Thanks for the info, Ricky Cadden! :D

  30. It seems Nokia has upgraded the N95 for the US market, taking care of most of the problems that it had faced earlier.

The first is that the thing finally has US 3G. It’s 850/1900, so you’re cruising on AT&T’s HSDPA network at speeds up to 3.6mbps. That’s fast.Of course, you can still fall back to EDGE, if you’re out of area. Worldwide travelers should know that they did remove the 2100 HSDPA.

Oh and by the way, the BL-6F doesn’t get into the old n95s :( . From what they’ve said the BL-6F needs more space in the battery compartment. If this phone does come out, then it’l be a really bad day for all euro n95 users out there..

    Symbian-Guru says:
Finally they’re throwing the US a bone and giving us a leg up over the European market.

    Oh well..i guess life’s like that…sniff

    regards,
    dilin - http://s603rd.blogspot.com

  31. so this means it will be out in the stores within sept?

  32. hey the european folks are gonna get a rewamped new n95 of there own soon. it has already been announced on the nokia go play event in London on 29 August. Its is black, has a bigger battery, new nokia music store and next gen ngage application pre-installed, 90 mb or so free ram, bigger screen! 2.8 inches and as far as I know no lens cover. and much more I guess.
