N-gage: Like the Wii or the PS3?

FutureWatch Beta has a killer post recently quoting a piece by Stuart Dredge about graphics or gameplay. I’ll let you click through to read the article, but this is a fascinating question, in my eyes. I wanted to get your thoughts on this. Do you want better graphics, with 3D sound and realistic graphics, or would you rather have a slightly inferior viewing experience with a superior playing experience?

I actually make this choice at least once a week. My roommate is a bit of a home theatre nut. He’s also into gaming. We’ve got an Xbox 360, a PS3, and recently, a Wii. The PS3 was hyped as having the best graphics of any gaming system ever, and is a big reason it’s so over highly priced. I don’t have a clue what all the specs are, but I know they’re impressive. The problem? The Playstation controller, for the most part, hasn’t changed much since the original on the PS1. A few modifications here and there, but it’s ultimately the same. The PS3 puts graphics before anything else.

Then there’s the Wii. The Wii has no issues admitting it’s all about gameplay. It’s common knowledge that the system uses the same hardware as the previous generation, the Gamecube. Nintendo merely took their time to completely redesign the way that we play video games, and in the process, have created an entirely new market for themselves, as well as encourage the other manufacturers to explore likewise.

Thus, in regards to the new Ngage platform, would you rather have better graphics, perhaps at a higher hardware cost, or would you prefer to have lesser graphics but a more enjoyable gameplay? I’ll take the latter, personally.

PS: What do you think of the hot new logo? You can view the animated version here, I like it.

  1. imo, the better graphics, the more enjoyable gameplay. Meaning, I’d rather carbon on my PC’s high graphics card than suffer on a bad graphics N-Gage. Of course however high they get with Ngage’s graphics, this won’t bare with a computer’s. But my point is, they should make it good enough so that it could make people leave their computers/gaming consoles for it. And simple games can also be enjoyed on high graphics.

Good luck in London btw ;)

  2. Definitely gameplay is the first priority when it comes to games. Doesn’t matter how pretty or realistic a game looks if the fun gameplay isn’t there the game won’t get much play time from me.

  3. Gameplay, any day.

Tarek, I don’t think Nokia is even trying to make gamers leave their consoles or PCs (in fact, they are developing some cross platform games). They are trying to get those hard core gamers to ALSO play on N-Gage, AND, get a lot new “casual” players to play on their phones.

  4. I think i miss explained. I meant, on my N80 for example, I don’t even bother looking for games. Why? Because the gaming quality doesn’t encourage me to do so, even if there are a few “enjoyable” games around. And in the end, what is the aim of the new NGage platform? I really don’t think to deliver just simple enjoyable games, you don’t need a new developed Ngage Platform to play low graphics games. It’s to deliver high quality games, which are enjoyable too, so it could somehow compete with similars as PSP for example. I hope you got my point.

  5. I like the new logo too. Kinda reminds me of the dreamcast somehow though…

I would value gameplay much more than graphics- so I’d rather see new thinking on gameplay than amazing graphics. Certainly I’d like to have the great graphics, but if the gaming experience sucks other than nice graphics- it’s not going to do much for me. I’ll vote for gameplay all day long.

  6. It is important to have good gameplay to PLAY the game. As far as the graphics is concerned, it will be good if it is presentable. N-Gage need not compete with PSP (since both are for different target users). But if they are unplayable, good graphics will be useless. Graphics without gameplay is USELESS on any platform.

  7. Considering I spend at least half of my gaming time playing Pokemon, I’d obviously prefer game play.

  8. Well, I prefer gameplay over graphics. And we are talking about a mobile phone, right? So casual gaming is the big point here.

I’m not expecting the new games to be PS3-like games but I want them to be catchy, and to be addictive. I like mobile games to play when I’m waiting for something, or in the Wc, or just because i have nothng better to do.

They wont replace my computer or my Wii. No, they have a different role. So, all I want is good thinking games. I just loved to play Zelda in my GB emulator. That was a game that took me a lot of time to complete and a lot of “waiting for my bus” days too.

I hope N-Gage sets its way in the right track this time. I’m really looking forward to it.

    Cheers
