Nokia Event Links Round-Up

Nokia_logo2
Good morning all you west coast Guru fans!  Olly here, covering the Nokia event that went on while most of you (myself included) were happily slumbering away.  While you’re Guru himself is in London, and has a ton of stories and pictures to share I’m sure, I thought I’d give you early morning American Westers some links to peruse.  So pull up a chair, get your cup o’ Joe brewin, open up that tabbed browser (you’re gonna need it, trust me!), and enjoy the linkfest!

So where do I begin here.  I guess the first thing I will do is link you to your favorite Mobile Diva, the lovely Darla Mack.  She’s been up all night (I’m sure), and has some great reviews of some of the Q&A questions that were seen on the virtual events Jaiku channel:

*First up is the Q&A session with none other than the N81’s product manager, regarding the new handset (both iterations of it): Linkage.  As a sidenote, this is probably going to be my next S60 handset… I was addicted to the Sims on my past N-Gage handsets, so hopefully I’ll find something new to feed my casual gaming habit!

*Next, along the same lines, we have Darla’s coverage of the Jaiku Q&A on the updates to the N95, specifically the 8GB version (I think my iPod is starting to get a little nervous here!).

*Finally we have the Diva’s take on the new N-Gage platform.  Darla is an old school N-Gager like myself, and while she and I might miss the ’side-talkin’ from the original N-Gage, I think the new platform (and devices), more than make up for it!

So, where to next?  (You’re tabbed browser is going to be stretched to it’s limit here, we’re only getting started!)  How about some news from Symbian-Freak, who’ve been all over this one from the start!

*First, we’ve got  Apoc’s take on the new N-Gage titles that should be available with the new devices… Nokia seems to have done it right this time, rather than a little half-assed like the last round!

*Next, the even bigger announcement than N-Gage (arguably), the Nokia Music Store!  Apoc covers that one too, so check it out!  Music OTA independent of your restrictive carrier?  Sounds like a winner!

All right, you still with me?  Is your Firefox starting to feel the memory strain from all these tabs?  We’re not done yet!!  I think it’s time we checked in with some of the big boys, specifically Engadget Mobile, GigaOM, and Gizmodo.

*First, from the venerable Brian Lam over at the Giz, we get a great high-res shot of the N81, as well as his first impressions of the phone… the verdict?  LOUD! (among other good things).  Did I mention that I love this phone?

*Next up is Engadget Mobile’s take on "Ovi", which is the portal (and brand) that Nokia is going to use for all of it’s various and sundry internet action — namely the N-Gage stuff, the Music Store, and I’m sure a lot more to come.   Incidentally, Ovi means "door" in Finnish, and seems fitting for a portal offering like this!

*Finally, rounding out the ‘big boy blogger’ action, we’ve go the skinny on the new N95 for the U.S. market from none other than Om Malik, which includes (much to the dismay of all of you who spent a grand on something that won’t work on U.S. 3G), the appropriate 3G brands for the former orange splat now known as AT&T.  While this isn’t specifically related to the Nokia Event, it’s still in the same vein and throws a little bone to stuck-on-EDGE folks in the States!

OK, you probably think I’m done, right?  WRONG!  A few more links for you to peruse, and then we’ll call it a morning (my boss keeps wondering why I’m blogging and not working anyway… but hey, gadgets are calling me!).

*So on the Nokia Press Release front, there are of course a whole bunch of links… I’ll let you peruse those on you’re own:
    Nokia Music Store Press Release
Nokia "Go Play" N-Gage and Device Press Release
Nokia Brings Back Snakes!!!! Press Release
Nokia’s "Bounce Boing Voyage" Oddly Named Game, Press Release

*We can’t of course forget about the great All About Symbian!   Rafe has been taking pictures like a madman, so first you have to be linked to his great Flickr feed… seriously, he’s taking more pictures than a 14 year old kid at a wet t-shirt contest!  The guys at AAS are taking their usual measured approach, and will have more in-depth coverage than anyone over the coming days and weeks I’m sure!

*Finally, we’ll end it with a bunch of posts from BeerBong over at the Nokian Blog.  BeerBong covers just about every aspect of this event (and sounds about as giddy as a kid in a candy store), so I’m just going to link you to his site in general… the last, oh, 7 posts are all event related!

So that’s it for this morning folks… my first cup of coffee is almost done, and I need to go get another one (and maybe get some actual work done?).  Stay tuned to S-G for more coverage, especially as your Guru Ricky gets his own thoughts up.

Thanks!

@Darla: Thanks! I just talked to Ricky on IM, he’s gone through 2 batteries on his N95 just taking pictures, so there should be lots to come!

  5. Thanks! I can’t wait to see a video or something. Nokia talks to nonchalantly about it!!

  6. I didn’t want to, but I’m trading my N95 in for the 8GB model.

  7. Does the N81 feature hardware acceleration? :P Lame question, I know, still, I want to clarify it.

  8. @Kevin: you probably aren’t the only one ;), the internal memory alone makes it worth it.

@Sandy: I would imagine it would, since even the N93(i) has it… for N-Gage it’d be a necessity!

  12. Thanks olly for the reply. For now, it is nice to see my N73ME will be able to run those games. I have to work hard to get an N95 8GB. That’s surely the device of the year.

  13. @Sandy: No problem!
