US 3G Nokia N95 Getting Battery Upgrade!

I received this in my inbox recently, and had to wait a few days to share. This is the official sales flyer for the US 3G Nokia N95. There’s several really HOT parts about it that I’m really excited about.
The first is that the thing finally has US 3G - HSDPA even. It’s 850/1900, so you’re cruising on AT&T’s HSDPA network at speeds up to 3.6mbps. That’s f-ing fast. Too bad it won’t work with T-mobile’s planned 3G network. Of course, you can still fall back to EDGE, if you’re out of area. Worldwide travelers should know that they did remove the 2100 HSDPA.
Second, the battery. Oh, that glorious battery. It’s been upped to a whopping 1200 mAh!! The Nokia BL-6F fits in there all snug and gives the N95 the power it so desperately needs. Compare that to the previous N-series Battery Overlord, the N73, with 1100 mAh.
Third, apparently it will ship with a 1GB MicroSD card in the box, which is double what my Euro shipped with.
Also, it’s black. Well, the back of it, anyways. Which I think is still hot. It is NOT the rumored 8GB version (my sources say that one will still be Euro 3G) but obviously since it supports MicroSDHC, you could simply toss an 8GB MicroSDHC in there and be on your merry way.
No word on if they increased the RAM, Darla Mack got the scoop that it’s been increased to 128MB of RAM!! I wonder how much will be available to users?! Also no word on pricing. Finally they’re throwing the US a bone and giving us a leg up over the European market. Also no word on if this will be a carrier release, but given their track record with AT&T, I’d hope to goodness guess that they told AT&T they wouldn’t be getting this bad boy. US 3G Nokia N95 - HSDPA and a Sling Player

I love GigaOM. I first found Om Malik’s writings in Business2.0 magazine (which I also love and pore over every edition) and I’m a huge fan. Just wanted to get that out there. So Om has a writeup on his site today regarding the newest episode of his new show, The GigaOM Show (you can watch the episode here) which featured guest Blake Krikorian, CEO and co-founder of Sling Media. Blake whipped out his Nokia N95 and started streaming from his Slingbox during the show.
Two things about this are HUGE:
1. Confirms the existence of the US 3G N95 (I already have confirmed it several times over, and actually have something juicy I’m waiting to get the go ahead for) but this is an actual unit in the wild. HSDPA on the N95. I will probably buy one. Quickly.
2. Even bigger than that, this is the first instance of a Symbian S60 Sling Player that’s NOT tied to European carrier 3’s services. My friend just asked me about this a few days ago, and I hadn’t heard anything. Well, there you go. Just a little bit longer.
So once again, it’s shaping up to be a VERY merry Christmas season, with this version of our beloved N95 set to hit the streets in September. Watch this site for more details on the US 3G Nokia N95.

Wow, so nice, i hope they add more ram.
Maybe the additional battery power is required for the US 3G chipset - if it’s not the same as the one used for the Euro N95.
So in reality, perhaps the performance will be similar. Only time will tell.
This is the best mobile news I’ve heard in YEARS…. yes, YEARS. I can’t wait!! Praise NOKIA!!
What? AT&T isn’t getting it??
That’s a shame. I was hoping I’d be able to get a deal on one from them, so I wouldn’t have to take a loss selling my current N95. Sad news!
Hopefully we’ll be able to get a BL-6F and drop it into existing N95s… think that’s a possibility?
That’s super. If this BL-6F really exists it should be easy to be bought for Euro N95s.It seems this battery has the same dimensions as BL-5F and only adds 5 gr. to the 120 gr. weight of N95.And I don’t think the shutter slider is removed,it’s only slightly redesigned together with the flash light.
I was told that the back was completely redesigned. Basically, the few millimeters in the raised camera module have been removed, so it’s slightly more flush with the back of the phone.
This is to make room for the fatter battery. Now, the battery in the Euro ones slips ever so slightly underneath this camera module, so it could be they had to raise the whole thing.
I was also told that they completely removed the shutter slider. I suppose it’ll be just like the other N-series where you press and hold the camera button to activate it. I don’t see a big issue with that, personally.
I really don’t like the idea of the lens not being protected. Sure doesn’t look like there’s a slider on it anymore. Dust, gunk, smudges… not thrilled with that.
Whoo Hooo!
I bought my 6120 Classic as an interim device - I promised myself I’d buy the first S60 device with US HSDPA. Of course, it has to be the N95, one of the most expensive phones on the market! Oh well, guess I’ll have to suffer through the investment…
Beyond from the initial joy in knowing that Nokia is at least thinking about the high-end American market, I’m actually a bit worried about what this means for future product plans. Instead of releasing the 8GB N95 with tri-band HSDPA, they’ve decided to create a separate product line for the States. I’d be OK with that, but if the N95 is any indication the US versions will lag nearly a whole generation behind their European counterparts, which is a huge bummer.
Did no one notice the raised multimedia buttons in the pic??
Will this US 3G N95 be compatible with the TMobile US 3G networks?
Just called the Chicago Nokia Flagship Store. Referred to release information, however, no release date. They did ask for my contact information to contact me once it is available in Chicago.
Without more free RAM it’s the same shite.
I thought HSDPA required SP2?
I find it interesting that there is a front facing camera on the US version of the device, given no american carrier supports video conf. Unless At&T will be taking on the device and using it for their video share service? Food for thought
ooh, good point Brendan. Though, I’d personally wouldn’t care if it stays. I like using the front facing camera for pics and it would make for neat VoIP calling with the pic.
Don’t believe it. Cannot imagine a Nokia Ad where they so explicitly start making batterypower a great feature.
Wow. According to Darla the ram has been increased to 128mb. I can’t wait to get my hands on this baby!
Any idea at all of when these will hit the states?
OH MY GOD!!!!! THIS is THE news of THE year! Woah… me has to have one..
:D
I’ve let the hype set in over the last hour. I purchased my N95 (us warranty) last week.. yes, sux to be me. I did get a 1gb card though odd I guess. Got it from ***mall for $624. Version 12 firmware, all the 3rd party apps.. its a great phone but my battery died before getting home from work and I have the memory issues. I just purchased the Nokia USB charger today too! All of that being said I have two questions. 1. Where are the FCC papers, won’t this device have to pass the tests to use the 850/1900 freq? 2. Does Nokia risk total irritation of its small, although loyal consumer base by releasing this version barely 5 months after the launch of the original one? I’m on T-mobile and just called them about HSDPA 3.5G.. yes.. 1700mhz I know but I was curious. They still have no literature or a release day. **SIGH** What to do, what to do????
Darla Mack mentions on her blog that it would be on Nokia site close to end of Q4 and maybe with AT&T Q1 08. So you will get a good half a year with yours!
Ha, yeah.. maybe in 6 months T-Mobile will have their 1700Mhz HSDPA sorted out.
Antoine made an interesting point and I’llsay that I think it may be correct.. having Nokia split off from the rest of their much larger global base to create a niche device for the North American market could be a catch 22.
I started using Nokia phones whilst overseas and I was always amazed at how far behind things were back stateside. Yes Sprint and Verizon are doing great things with their networks but its total tunnel vision for the customer, you never think about will my device work outside of our borders enabling a growing global economy with a seamless transition from airport to airport with out a hitch. The three year Nokia Display centers are now closing all over the states which leaves people from overseas that moved to the US or the smaller communities like this one (although growing) to make the devices known. I get “what carries has that phone” all the time here. SO frustrating! As if Verizon or whoever makes the device!! Either Nokia has to work with T-Mobile, Rogers, ATT etc to get their devices in peoples hands (fully working models.. with fully working firmware) accompanied by a massive marketing campaign with the all to familiar and equally tragic commercials showing how the “world phone will work in Paris” or things will simply remain the same. Moto and Samsung will lead the pack and the rest of us will wonder around measuring our height in centimeters and purchasing our milk in gallons aimlessly confused as to why we are disadvantged by wanting, and even having the newest technology that just wont work here but will in the 118 other GSM enabled countries!!!
One more thing..
How’s Stevey gonna like the N95 with all the bugs sorted out sitting on the same network competing with the iPhone? (I use a mac so please no flames from the apple crowd)
A round of applause if Nokia and ATT can work it all out though.. could be the beginning of a resolution to the problem that I presented above.
And thanks to Darla and the rest for keeping us informed.
Cheers!
The N95 has no chance against the iPhone in the US. The interface blows donkey nuts.
http://darlamack.blogs.com/darlamack/2007/08/itheme-for-s60-.html
Iphone skin for the phone. now what?
I agree the iPhone will remain dominant, but thats because the majority of the users wouldn’t know what to do with 80% of the features of the N95, remember it IS a smart phone and the apple is not.
The iPhone has a beautiful interface.. truly cutting edge. Its a very young device and one that is closed to other apps etc for the time being. I dare say that by the time the iPhone matures into a device that allows for the flexibility that Nokia offers with their line of E and N series phones, Nokia will have something that will be extremely competitive.
We all win because this competitiveness spawns innovation.
Back to the topic of the US N95…
OMG, seriously people? Can we NOT always have mac fanboys defending their saviour to the death? I’ve said my feelings on the iPhone, but this is really not relevant to this topic in the least bit.
I don’t delete or edit comments, but let’s not let this great news reduce us to bantering idiots, arguing about devices that don’t even compete for the same consumer. That’s just daft.
(I’m not calling anyone who’s commented an idiot, just saying that if we let this get down to the point where we’re arguing about that, well, if the shoe fits…..)
Let’s assume for a second that this new release actually comes out, and to make it clear.. I hope it does.. Will it/Can it be called the N95? Seriously.. does it not have to be the N95i or N96 or something different? The NOKUS N95 is already stateside.. I’m listening to music on it right now
So.. what do you think? N95i.. surely there is no N95-8gb model coming.. at least not stamped 8gb on the facia. That would be an odd label when the 16 and 32gb cards come out? (Yes it will support up to 32gb when they are released albeit a long time from now)
So.. is it real or not.. if so.. whats the name? I’d hate to have to deal with an SKU#’s firmware etc etc for the “same” device.
Why can’t it be called the N95? Look at the E70. Two versions, since it’s tri-band. And there’s no designation other than technical (E70-1, E70-2). I don’t think it needs to be different.
And yes, the 8GB model is still coming, as far as I know. However, I agree that one should be a different name, or an i or something, since it’s drastically changing the interior. It’s a hard drive, not just a bigger memory card.
So…it’s real (I have proof coming), and the name is the N95. I’m sure it will have a technical designation such as N95-3 or something like that. The firmware, well, like I said, it’ll be the same as the E70, for example.
Hard drive!! Yikes.. ok. Thanks for the clarification. Are we talking flash based hard drive or something with moving parts? Good point on the E-70. Hopefully a third party will provide a rear housing cover that will allow for the BL-6F battery in the current models.
.. what’s the point of the 8gb hard drive when there is an hdsc-micro-sd card slot on the device already? Marketing against that other device comes to mind but otherwise…?
Shame on you nokia if you dont send some of these on europe market! i just wanted to buy N95 because i got money buy now i will wait for this N95 if it will be in europe…
Guess Nokia is gonna go ahead and leave us euro users with a sore head.
I mean after fishing out all that money for a defective phone..they are putting salt on the wound by going along and releasing a far better phone in a different market!!
http://s603rd.blogspot.com
My guess is that you guys in the 2100mhz world will get a new device faster than we will over here. Although the N. America market /may/ receive this bug fix release, which seems to be a N95 rev B or whatever?, I think you will get its successor, whatever it is.. before we do… I would think that you could also expect a revision for the euro/aspac market at the same time as nothing changes.. based on the specs except the radio frequency. I’m putting my money on the name being N95i, it being black, 128mb memory, New battery, and some form of zeiss lens protection.
Once T-Mobile gets online with UMTS 1700, I think we could see Nokia find justification to pour additional funds into the US market as the two largest GSM carries will have consumers demanding HSDPA. We have to remember that WiMAX is already here in some fashion via Sprint so the GSM carriers can compete.
I really hope to see quad-band UMTS in the next 12-18 months. Qualcomm and Broadcom.. can’t we all just get along
I would surmise that the 8GB version will have the microsd slot removed to make room for the harddrive. I’ve only heard several mentions of the 8gb version (apart from the evidence we’ve all seen) so i don’t know for sure.
N95 just keeps getting better and better. Firstly better firmware for the camera, now increased battery and double the RAM. I think Nokia really has made an effort to iron out all the bugs this time from their N95 flagship device! Kudos Nokia
simply un-freakin’-believable!!! the us is accually going to get a true hsdpa symbian smartphone with ram!!! well i want.that is unless the true p-series sucessor(with tri band hsdpa.like k850) is announced by then, then it would be bye bye to my thoughts of owning my first nokia phone.
Ricky, is there any confirmation of Darla Mack’s claim that this won’t hit until late Q4? In your previous post you hinted at a September release, so there’s some inconsistency there (unless you’re just talking about an announcement and she’s talking about retail availability).
I know that Darla’s sources are solid, so I’d go with hers. Unfortunately, we don’t usually get much clarification, and until it’s been officially announced by Nokia, has no official intended release date. I’ve heard it’s going to be ready in Sept., but that could easily just be ready for announcement, who knows. I think, however, it would be safe to assume, for those saving pennies, that you’ll see it before 2008 hits us.
1. I kindly asked that this not degrade into an Apple vs. Nokia post. Please keep comments relevant.
2. I don’t recall retracting any rumors in the past. Please enlighten us.
Please, Please, Please shut the fark up about the iphone.
This is a story about the N95, which is a smartphone and entirely different from the iphone, which is not a smartphone, is closed to third-party applications, and makes you go through the ridiculous routine of emailing stuff to yourself(over EDGE, let’s not forget) if you want to save the file.
If “most consumers will choose the iphone”, which is far from certain, then great for them. They wouldn’t know what to do with a real smartphone anyways.
Really a whopping 128MB? The european version already has a whopping 160 MB. I guess they shortchanged you US guys
A redesign of the backcover to add a millimeter or 1.5 to the batterythickness looks like a great idea. I guess it will be available for the other N95 models too. For the heavy daily user it seems a good solution, but for the heavier roadwork I prefere a Li-Ion battpack that kan charge my phone 3x or more…
snoyt , the 160Mb is ROM, not RAM. The RAM in currnent N95’s as we know it is only 64Mb, and that cuased major problems with out of memory errors, etc. The 128Mb upgrade will indeed solve these issues.
Also Why is Nokia calling this new N95, the N95. One would have thought it would be called the N95i!!
The differences are quite substantial to my knowledge, or are they trying to hide the fact that in reality, the N95 should have come with all these upgrades from day one!
What about the ear piece noise humming that goes on with the N95. Has Nokia finally fixed this???
Hi Mazor.. I commented near the beginning of the topic about the need for Nokia to unfortunately adopt mass marketing campaigns in the US to compete with other devices. Whilst Nokia is the world leader.. by a HUGE margin, they are currently 3rd in N. America. Educating the masses on the offerings from the likes of Nokia will be an uphill battle unless they work with vendors like ATT, Rogers, T-Mobile etc and begin to have those carries provide the phone. “SIM Free” as the call it overseas or “Unlocked” is always going to be an expensive, niche, option but will only spark casual, temporary interest in the N. American user. (obvious generalisation I know). In a recent trip to the N. Atlantic I saw tons of stores carrying the N73, which I was using at the time ($400+ unlocked was what I paid in the USA). 02, Voda, T-Mobile etc were all offering the phone with a plan. Vendors were literally hanging Nokia gear in the windows and coming into the streets to get your business. Video’s in the rail stations and tv commercials were everywhere.. I certainly did not feel like the odd man out. Return to the US.. “Hey.. is that the new pearl?” NOOOO!!! ITS NOT!!
My point is.. like other popular devices.. people in N. America want to know.. have been trained from the time bag phones were cool, that you get your mobile device from the carrier hence the “Who has that phone” questions meaning.. not Nokia, Samsung, Moto.. but Verizon, Sprint, ATT, T-mob etc. Lets just hope that ATT and T-mobile can sort out an agreement to carry the phone, subsidized, and with out bogarting the firmware.. which is THE stupidist thing they can do.
EDGE.. I thought I would mention.. I am getting damn good speed on T-Mobile Edge.. apparently the N95 is a Class 32 Edge device (correct me if Im wrong) so.. depending on the load on your associated cell tower.. you can pull close to 300kbps on the device. Its faster than my E61i, N73, or E61 that I had previous to the N95. Its not 384k or 3.6mb but is plenty to have IM+, Roadsync, an IMAP connection, and a quick google search all at once. Its hell on the battery but I’ve been successful running all of the above in tandem without memory issues and with adequate speeds.
Again.. fingers crossed for a global device, Quad band GSM, Quad Band UMTS from Nokia with enough ram, a good battery, and a global warranty! Is that really too much to ask?
Later
As usual, Nokia is doing a half-assed job with this.
Why not make it a TRUE WORLD PHONE and keep the HSDPA-2100 and just add the 850/1900 US freq’s.
Then I would buy one.
In the mean time I will stick with my Treo 750 which is a true world phone.
Yes! the back is black and it will support 3G, this is totally awesome! me wants one I will sell everything for it *__________*
Here’s to joining the N93 club.. the land of the forgotten Mobile. It’s time to hold’em or dump’em guys and gals.. pretty soon our “manual shuttered” N95’s are going to be considered gone the way of the Smithsonian. I dare say that I may hold out for
the next model when T-mobile and Nokia get together in 1700/1900/2100 HSDPA goodness. Certain places have the “old” N95 for under $650.. oh well..
“Shutters manually” at the thought of having to use an old mobile.

Nice news!
But where is this pic from? (http://symbianguru.typepad.com/welcome/images/2007/08/09/usn95revised.png)
Not doubting anyone, but i can’t find it!
On the nokiausa.com and nseries.com, it still shows the old specs!
=D
correcting the image link on last comment: http://symbianguru.typepad.com/welcome/images/2007/08/09/usn95revised.png
I live in India. Here the Nokia customer care dont even acknowledge that there is a slider problem with the current model! No chance of getting any replaced!
I have seen faulty sliders in the shop and came back! This new model wont come in anytime for the next 1 year here!
Do you guys know what date this is going to be released? Is it going to be with Tmobile or ATT after all?
I am trying to make video share work for N95.
I have both (A & B) my phones registered to SIP server. VOIP works fine.
When I call the B from A through 3G , i am unable to locate video share option. It is not in the Options menu.
I have added the SIP uri as per the manual. On the same setup i am able to make video share using two 6680 but not through N95!!!.
Any Ideas??
Thanks for the help
