Nokia Download! for PC Is Here

Nokia hinted at it a while back: they’re bringing the Download! app off the phone and onto your PC! Cool, huh? Not really. My new friend Matt at Nokia Geek has the details and the link, and I took a few minutes to play with it.

First off, you have to install a new Download! app to your phone. Why? I don’t know. As Matt points out, it doesn’t seem to contain anything different than the other one already installed. Why can’t the desktop thing just talk to the existing one? Who knows.

Secondly, it doesn’t really seem to do anything special other than more of a glorified screen-cast from your mobile to your computer.

Thirdly, as I was trying to get it setup to do a proper review/analysis for this post, I couldn’t get it to do anything with my N95. Even though Matt said he had it working fine, it took me ~15 minutes to connect, much less attempt to view content or anything.

Sorry, Nokia, consider this uninstalled. Not impressed.

  1. I believe it is still in the Beta…Im sure things will get better. Plus its a real help to the people who have the Download! app removed by the network operators..

  2. Its definitely a step in the right direction and i hope they improve on it until its ready for full release. Its a BETA afterall, so no point in it screwing up the built in Download if something goes wrong, they just provided a test version instead.

One cool thing i found is that you can administer some basic things on your phone via the pc software. Like i could install and uninstall apps, transfer files, and even find stuff i thought i had long removed from the phone.

This is partly how i want the future pc suite to be.

  3. yup i tried to install on pc. No go :-(. Hopefully we will have a better beta available soon :-)

  4. I’m with you on this mate. It’s kinda nice that it’s there and they’re trying something, but it’s not overly useful right now. Uninstalled.
