Nokia: Go Play - Announcement or Launch?

08292007017
You didn’t think I’d sit here and praise EVERYTHING Nokia did yesterday, did you? Of course not. So my big question is, how come everyone’s calling it a "launch"? To the best of my knowledge, I’m not able to purchase or use ANYTHING that was revealed in London on the 29th. The Music Store, Music Player, Ngage Platform, N81, N95 8GB, and those S40 devices, nothing’s available, or will be for another month at least.

So then was it an announcement or a launch?

I’d say it was an announcement. A VERY lavish announcement. But not a
launch. I realize that companies have to time things like this
strategically, but it’s very anti-climactic to attend something like
that, with all this cool stuff, and not be able to use/get any of it.
I’d LOVE to be sitting here exploring Ovi, previewing trials of Ngage
games, and importing my music library into the new Nokia Music Player,
but I’m unable.

One thing that….er….the competition in the music arena…does right
is product announcements/launches. The best words that anyone can ever
say in a promotional event, in my opinion, is "And this is available
right now." It keeps the hype going. Don’t get me wrong, I’m really
really excited for all of the stuff that was announced, but what’s
going to happen when it’s actually launched? Another big event?

It just seems a bit silly to me, that’s all. Oh, and did I mention yet
that the music store will be a regional launch? What’s that mean? It
means the US is going to get the shaft. Again. It’s ok, we’re used to
it. So is Apple, Nokia. So is Apple.

  1. Actually dey should build a new phone model n supply it 2 da bloggers 4 reviews, n den dey should arrange a party like dis”Go Play”, after which da phones should b made available 2 all imidiately… dis wil give boost 2 da sales of dere new products… bt nw i thnk v have 2 wait 4 few months, 4 da new product 2 b in our hands….

    Dis seems silly, NOKIA!!!

  2. I thought everyone over there had a chance to play with the devices?

  3. Mark - we did have plenty of time to play, but at the end of the day, we still ended up going home with our regular N95s. And I still can’t setup an Ovi account, or purchase an N81. Not for a few months, anyways. Why not wait a month or two and make the announcement when they’re available? It’s just a bit anticlimactic.

  4. i think it’s an announcement hehe. IMO nokia just wants people to wait wait and wait till we are sick and tired of phones we’ve seen a long time back when it actually reaches our hands.

  5. Now, I’m no Apple fan (I own the N70, E62 and N95), but when Apple holds an event/launch - Steve Jobs finishes with, “…and it’s available Today.”

I was really excited about the event but was quickly let down and all I can do was read about it and not really punch in my American Express credit card number anywhere.

It was a multimedia press release. It is what press releases have become.
