RANT: Nokia N95 Naming Scheme!
OK, this is probably petty of me, but it still is something that is driving me nuts. Why oh why, Nokia, could you not have done a better job of differentiating between the various models of N95? This doesn’t make any sense to me anyway, but especially on your flagship device!
Now I know that many people will have a "who cares?" type of attitude, but think about some of the problems that are associated with this. First off, taking the N95 US 3G model… there is already an N95 for sale on the U.S. Nokia site, not to mention on many of the online retailers. Without giving the new model a name like "N95g" or something, I have to check the spec sheet to make sure I’m ordering the correct model.
Or on the N95 8GB, why not name it the "N95B" (B for black), or something like that?
In the past, Nokia has been fairly good about this. Take the 668x series… pretty straightforward, you have the 6680 (3G, Video Calling), 6681 (3G, no Video calling), and 6682 (American market, no 3G, no video calling). Three separate model numbers!!!
I know it seems like a small thing, but the whole point of these higher end phones is a push to sell outside the operator market… without clear definition, you really run the risk of some poor sap thinking he’s buying a spanking new N95US3G for Cingular AT&T’s HSDPA network, but ending up with just a plane Jane low original N95.
My suggestion for naming?
N95 OG (original)
N95 3G (American 3G variant)
N95 GB (Black 8gb version).
Is that too much to ask?

Haven’t you noticed that this is the new naming scheme. Number + suffix.
N95 8 GB
N95 USA
N95
6500 Classic
6500 Slide
8600 Luna
7500 Prism
7900 Prism
Seems this is what they like to do. You know at the end of the day be glad we aren’t Samsung addicts. Hey look the SCH-i520 came out!
I have a suggestions..
If Nokia is reading this..
Nokia N95 US3G should be called Nokia N95i since its the updated hardware..
Nokia N95 Music Edition since it has 8GB and Its Black..
N95i for the black one, since it’s on the same order as the other music phones.
And I don’t see why they couldn’t go with a SE-style naming scheme for the US version. Say, N95a?
Stefan,I haven’t got a problem to remember all Samsung models or at least these meant for Europe, because this is the continent I live in.
Why should the N95 US 3G be called N95 3G. It already 3G in the original version. Not our fault that you guys don’t have 3G.
I agree that the US version should have some name that differentiates it but isn’t N95 US just enough? The black one should eithar have an i or b at the end.
I think they should name the 8 gb version as N95 ME.
other than that i’m fine with naming the us version as N95 US and please no N95 Classic (for the European Version), we are not apple.
i think the existing names are the best if the customer knows what he’s after. N95= original, N95 USA= US 3G variant, N95 8gb= an N95 with 8gb storage. And i hate sumsung names too.
I completely agree! I’m glad to see someone shares my views on it. I’ve been ranting about this for a while now on the N95 forum. I can see it confusing a lot of consumers.
How about just renaming the original to N9wedidntknowwhattheFweweredoing5 and be done with it.
When the US FCC leaked the new versions on the 21st or 22nd of August, there was an explanation of the naming schemes. Basically Nokia are using the internal handset revision numbers for the non-8 GB version.
Hence the US N95 is the N95-3. Have a look. It’s written in the draft manual, page 10. The original is N95-1, the 8 GB is N95-2. Internal handset revision numbers have been used since the 5110! For more proof check out agencies like the US FCC and the Bluetooth SIG.
Oh, okay- so the user just needs to take the battery out and look on the label under it to find out what N95 they have in their hand? That’s convenient.
