What’s Going On In L.A.?

S60_dan
I announced earlier that I’m headed to L.A. on the 27th for a Nokia Nseries party at a Hollywood Hills mansion. I’m really excited about this event, even though I know *nothing* about what it’s for. In fact, NO ONE does. Stefan over at IntoMobile has some clues, and I’ve collected some along the way. I like to post these cause it’s like an episode of Law & Order (SVU, though, not the other two crappy ones) where you have clues and you have to put them together to figure things out. Love that.

So what do we KNOW about this event? We know it’s in Hollywood Hills, which is ultra-high profile. We also know that it’s NOT connected to S60, as is evidenced by Dan Shugrue’s post announcing it, where he comments that it is NOT an Evening with S60 event, nor was he able to get S60 to help sponsor it.

Dan also lets loose that:

The LA Mansion party is a celebration of our new
and exciting Nokia Nseries fall product portfolio as well as a
recognition of Nokia Nseries increasing sales and marketing presence in
California. In other words, we won’t be announcing any new devices,
we’ll be showing the devices that have been announced to our California
base.

I don’t buy it. This seems like an AWFULLY big party to only be
re-showing the stuff that was already shown in London, and also, why
would I be invited, since I was in London?

Also, the statement that it’s all for the California base, meh. Just
doesn’t float well with me. I mean, I suppose there’s no reason that
Nokia couldn’t have been tracking their sales by state, but still.

There’s also mention of a new "Unlocked" campaign coming. THIS is what
I think is the big thing. Nokia’s going to announce that they’re going
to be selling phones in a TON of new distribution points. That’s
something I could see being a big hoopla for.

But, since no one knows the facts (or at least they’re not sharing them
with me), we’ll just have to wait. In any case, I’ve promised to do a
few episodes of Chatting with the Guru out there, and will be taking
PLENTY of pics/vids to last, so rest assured, your Guru is there.

  1. I visited L.A., and indeed Hollywood, for the first time ever this year - loved every single minute of it!! I even used the N95 sat nav get to us from LAX to our hotel.

I’d love to go to this event, but I can’t afford it! But hey, I’m sure the Guru will do a fine job of making us feel like we’re there, right? (^_-)

  2. Ricky, have a great time in LA. Yes, please keep us non-attendees posted on any new announcements!

  3. There was a posting on M-R with supposedly a quote from someone at Nokia saying they are not going to announce anything new, and that its just a promo event for the California market base on the latest N-Series etc. I.e. nothing new, just a focused event for CA. We’ll see.

  4. Yes,Viipottaja,I post it.Here you can see it,it is comment #16:http://blogs.s60.com/consumed/2007/08/calling_s60_fans_in_california.html#comments

  5. I know what’s going to happen in LA.. I have been in touch with my contact about this.

Before he gave me my invitation he clearly explained to me what it was all about, before making a choice.

I understood what it is… But I was more interested in meeting the GURU, Darla, Angelwing0, Fellow Hofoers, and WOM World.

    Basically being Nokia.. CONNECTING PEOPLE!!

  6. I think the Nseries Unlocked campaign in LA might be the same as the Unlocked campaign here in NYC. Basically events, bluetooth stations, demos spread out all over the city.

The NYC Unlocked campaign site is still up. http://nseries.com/nyc

  7. I’ve said it over and over that Nokia let Apple pull the rug out from under them. This is Nokia’s attempt to grab the chic LA market before everyone here buys an iPhone. People here have money or will spend it regardless to have the coolest, best, whatever.

I’ve always felt the N and Eseries Symbian devices were the “Macintosh of the smartphone” and I bet Nokia felt the same. Now that Apple has released their iPhone brand to the already Apple loyal out here, well, Nokia has some catching up to do.

I think the Symbian devices are perfect for former-Windows techies that went Macintosh for their computing platform of choice. The Nokia devices offer up a great UI and feature set without the clumliness of Windows Mobile. But for the typical user, especially typical Apple user, the iPhone is tight compared to the Symbian experience.
