Google Maps Now Native S60 + GPS for N95!

Google Maps Mobile has FINALLY been updated to a native S60 application, and even supports the N95’s internal GPS! You can see the white GPS dot on the screenshot. Other than that, it looks pretty similar to the old version, only faster since it’s native.
The coolest feature that I’ve found in the ten minutes I’ve been playing with it is the ability to save a search result directly to the Contacts application! It automatically fills in all the address fields correctly. I’m a huge fan of that.
You can get the install directly on your N95 by going to www.google.com/gmm
in the phone’s browser. I have no clue if this works on other devices, or if it works with a Bluetooth GPS unit. Anyone care to test and report back?
Watch this space, also, as I’ll be doing a side-by-side comparison vs. Nokia Maps and should have that up next week sometime.

I’ve only used it for a few minutes now (and I don’t have GPS), but there seem to be some (somewhat annoying) shortcomings compared to the Java app:
1) no possibility to “select point on the map” as starting/ending point; always have to enter an address manually
2) no possibility to just “find location”; always have to look for directions (at least I could not find just an option to just look for a spot)
3) no possibility to save a location/search as a “favorite”
Nokia Maps has categories of POIs, which Google Maps does not appear to have. But the search function seems to work pretty well (maybe better than on Maps, have not tried it too much on Maps).
tested on the e62, it scans for a bluetooth GPS unit, should work
Tested on E61i with BT GPS and worked like a charm
Looks like it is native now too, much faster. Just in time for my trip to Portugal
works great on my n73. way smoother, faster, and searching is much better. now where do i get a bluetooth adaptor?
Able to download to E90! I noticed it didn’t replace the existing Google Maps (no gps positioning) though as if its another separate application. It also tries to locate satellites on its own. I was able to connect but its cloudy here right now in LA area so the signal for satellites a bit weak. Will try again later on today. So far it looks nice.
Nice GMM finally has a native S60 version but there it is missing most functions I expected:
- no navigation, favourites, “route from my position”,… right now the GPS is only used to display a dot, it doesn’t even tell you, what street you are in
- no pointer to select a point on the map,… (unlike previous versions)
I think this is a first “let’s see if the GPS input works with all the devices out there” release, because you have to get the basics working before you can start coding all those nice funktions we know from the java-versions.
I can’t wait to see the next versions…
Is missing several things yes, AND (!) it has a ugly icon
Btw, if/when Nokia buys Naviteq, all this would be genarating revenue for Nokia too right?
Or does Google use the other one (forget the name now)?
Works great on an N75, MUCH faster than the previous app. Thanks for posting this.
Wow! Nice app! Thanks for keeping us informed Ricky - I’ll be sure to test it out in the coming week. To be honest, it already looks like it might be better than Nokia’s maps app - what a indictment!
Just downloaded it on N80 IE Works PERFECT!!!
yes you can route from your current gps position, in the routing form hit options and select “my position” or something like that.
Rafe on AAS was kind enough to point out that “Search” can (of course, silly me) be used to find a specific spot/address on the map. Some my gripe #2 is scratched.
but you can’t download the map one time only as in Nokia maps, right ?
Ricky,
Put the mobile code in the posts so I can download easier!
I agree with Stanley, it’s so much faster and better on the N75, it’s just ridiculous. No long startup times, to continual asking for permission to run and use the data connection, nice new features, and much more responsive UI. Great, just great.
Another happy N75 user reporting in, easily twice as fast as the Java app and the immediate startup is amazing. Already used this twice tonight to look up food delivery.
Works great on my Nokia 6110 Navigator - and supports the internal GPS!
It is perfect!
Works like a charm on my N93.
Fast enough with my Nokia 6290 and BT338 gps. No problems as yet.
I’m using it on my N80+BTGPS. Works great. I’m so glad to have a much faster alternative to Nokia Maps (btw, where is the new NM for the N80?). One thing I really want to see is integration between GOOG-411 and GMM–I want the “map it” option on GOOG-411 to send an SMS to my phone that will get picked up by GMM and have it automatically start navigating from my current position. I already have another app that launches a phone-side app based on a received SMS, so the precedent is there.
Ability to store contacts is the only one difference from other GPS maps navigation applications. The main functionality is still the same.
I installed it as well and it looks great BUT I realized that an internet connection was built up and this costs a lot!
Works on the Nokia E65 too!
Tried it with Sony K600i and LG TU500.
Bluetooth GPS does not work with either.
Checked the support forum and a number of people have been reporting that their BT GPS that previously worked has now stopped working.
There does not appear to be any response from Google to any of the reported problems.
hi,
can you tell me where can I download it on web.
as *.sis or *.sisx download or something, for my Nokia N80 IE I seem to got lost…:)
thanks in advance
The new Google Map caused my N95 8GB to crash after some usage. The phone will restart itself. Anyone got the same problem?
were i can get a softwere for n95
isnt there a permanent way 2 get these maps on ur phone…the net bill is huge just 2 open the map :S…plz do comment
why symbian s60 9.2 like 6110 navigator,6120 classic sometimes restart itself and after restart ,there`s no sound. example: when i receive call, no ringing tone& i can`t heard sound from the caller.. please help me… the phone works normal, when i once again restart manually ..
Can anyone help me? i have downloaded the jar file from google maps but when i try to transfer the file onto my N95 i dont know where to install it, am using a data cable together with Nseries computer software
Adam - the easiest way to get the app is just to visit http://www.google.com/gmm directly from your handset. You can then click on the link and it will download and install the application for you, easy peasy.
Remember, Google Maps Mobile uses a data connection to download the maps, thus you should have a rather generous mobile data package before installing and using.
Also, if you have a .jar file, then you haven’t got the latest version. The most recent version should be a .sis file.
Hello guys,
IS there any way or Navigation Software which can run with no Data connection ? Because this one requires a data connection all the times which is costing alot !
