Mp3tunes.com, the N800, and You

One of the cool things about the N800 Internet Tablet is the Tableteer website. You can only get to this site through the Internet Tablet, and it just showcases different apps and uses and accessories for the N800. Pretty simple. So simple, I haven’t been to it in a while. It’s only somewhat updated, so I don’t really check it all that often. They do have an applet (aka widget) that you can put on your home screen that will scroll through current features on the Tableteer, and yesterday I decided to see if anything was new.

Lo and behold, we have a new partnership for the N800 Internet Tablet - MP3Tunes.com…..

I’ve never heard of MP3Tunes.com, so I checked it out. The business
model sounds familiar. You sign up for a free account and get your own
online "locker." You can upload your music to this locker, and then
access it from anywhere. On the site, they advertise "unlimited
uploads." Heh, I’ve got ~6,500 mp3s on my computer, we’ll see if it’s
really "unlimited." Turns out, it’s not. Well, at least not for me.
When I signed up, they were mysteriously "out" of unlimited lockers, so
I get to start with 1GB. Nice.

I downloaded the applet onto my N800, and have it setting on my home
screen. I don’t like that it’s only an applet. I couldn’t find an
actual program on my tablet at all. The idea is that now I can have
access to my music whether my home computer is on or not. They do have
a handy little desktop application that will periodically sync my
desktop collection with the "locker."

Edit - Surprise surprise, it actually works pretty good. I can create
playlists in my locker and they show up on the applet, and I can also
access my locker (through the tablet’s web browser). However, I can see
a big problem for someone with 40GB+ of music. I’m not sure I’d be
enticed to tie up my internet connection that long, just for this.

What do you think? I’d assume you could access this on your S60
devices, as well, albeit without the fun little app. However, since I
have Orb on my laptop at home, I’ll pass on this business. Interesting
app, though.

By the way, hey, Nokia. These little applets for the tablet? Yeah, let’s get some more of them, shall we? Thanks.

  1. Ricky,

    1) any idea if it works on the 770? Probably not, but I will try

    2) Can you clarify what you meant by “I can see a big problem for someone with 40GB+ of music. I’m not sure I’d be enticed to tie up my internet connection that long, just for this.”. Once the music is uploaded to the locker, why would the internet conncetion be tied up? I mean is that not just a one time investment, and synching would not mean that you effectively uploading the whole thing again.

  2. Just the one time investment, but uploading that much data will take quite a while, even on the best internet connection.

  3. Hey Rick,

Thanks for your positive comments about MP3tunes. I thought to let you know you were upgraded almost immediately to unlimited storage (we always give folks 1 gb to start but sometimes there is a queue for unlimited).

It does take some time and bandwidth to upload your music library to your Locker, but you can schedule it to run during your off-peak usage times and before you know it, your music is stored safely online — accessible pretty much anywhere you can connect to the web.

The Applet was actually written for the 770….

    Best regards,

  4. I had tried MP3Tunes a year ago and I was a bit circumspect of transferring a lot of music onto it wondering if all that effort would mean nothing if the web service dies an untimely death. One good feature of MP3Tunes was that there were some free music stations available on it which can be used to play songs to get a feel of the user interface and test the quality of service. Since then, whenever I felt like testing MP3Tunes again, I always ended up being satisfied with it.

It has become so popular, especially in the past one year, that it now gives me the confidence to transfer most of my music from my own web host(and get rid of its pesky web interface) to MP3Tunes.
