First Account of OTA Firmware Update on S60?

I know that Nokia/S60 has been enabling OTA firmware updates in the newer devices lately, but as far as I know, there’s not any accounts of the OTA firmware update actually happening, it’s merely there for the future.

Browsing HowardForums this morning, I came across this thread where it sounds like a user was able to update the branded firmware on his Nokia N75 Over-The-Air. If you’re familiar with updating the firmware on your S60 handset currently, it’s no easy process. First of all, actually finding out that there is a new firmware available for your handset is a process, and then performing the update actually resets your handset to the state it was in when you first unboxed it. That means all your settings are usually back at the default, and any applications that you have installed must be re-installed. I put together a walkthrough here showing how to do it successfully and with minimal hassle.

With that in mind, the idea of Over-The-Air (OTA) firmware updates is daunting, to say the least. That’s why this detailed account of how it works was interesting to me. Apparently, Nokia is learning well, as this user reports that the update did not interfere with any settings or applications, but left his phone pretty much exactly as it was before the update.

Has anyone else had the experience of updating their Nokia’s firmware OTA?

  1. Nokia N80 (EU version) had OTA enabled for the 2nd latest FW. I used it, no hassle at all. And no need for backups or re-installs. It was year 2006. Since then, no OTA for us.

  2. While I havent had the experience of doing so, this should be a process that at least mid and high end handsets should have. Besides the ability to download the OTA update to a memory card and then run an update, it would only make sense that if manufacturers (besides Nokia) are pushing mobiles as the future of computing that a computer to update it would not be needed.

  3. I also did an OTA for my N80 some time ago.

  4. Bingo! It happened for me. I have the N75 (att) and was surprised to find the update available and working. My phone updated with no problems. My apps worked just fine after the update.

  5. Ricky, there’s been a firmware update for unbranded N75s for quite some time now. This is only for ATT-branded N75s, and apparently it sucks just as bad as the existing ATT firmware. I still recommend that everyone debrand your ATT-branded N75 as described in the links below.
