Happy Birthday, Nokia GSM Phones!

happy-anniversary-1
Stefan alerted me to the fact that today is the 15th anniversary of Nokia’s GSM handsets! It was on this day in 1993 that the 1011 started shipping. The first mass-produced handset, features included a 2 line display, 900MHz GSM, and it held 99 phone numbers. This thing was no small potatoes, weighing in at 475g and measuring 195mm x 60mm x 45mm. That’s HUGE!

Stefan’s got a huge picture on his Flickr account showing every Nokia handset up to the latest E-series, and alot of even have the codenames on there, which is fun. My first Nokia handset was the 6190, I believe. That’s pushing things back to 1998!! Nearly a decade of Nokia love for me. First entered the S60 world with the 6620, which, according to this picture, was 2003-2004. Ah, I remember that day as if it were yesterday! What a freakin great phone that was.

What about you? When was your first Nokia, and does it have a fun codename?

  1. Haha, both of my Nokia phones so far have funny codenames. The 6610 is called Jaqueline, and the 3250 is called Thunder. Hehe, Jaqueline, that’s the name of our faculty’s secretary. I used to hate her / fear her during my first 2 yrs, but ever since last yr, we hit it up and now I am roud to be one of the people Jako smiles to :p

  2. My first one was the 3110 introduced 1994. I was one of the last people in my circle of friends to get a cell/mobile! :)

  3. 2110, or whatever the US variant was at the time- that was 1994 or maybe ‘95 I believe… My first S60 was the 3650. Saw someone not long ago at the Cleveland airport. Feels and looks like a child’s toy now.

  4. 2007 - 1995 = 15? Really?

  5. The picture says that 1011, the first GSM phone, came 1993. I got mine in November 1993.
