More Site Updates
Well, it’s been a week, and let me tell you! My guru(a)symbian-guru(dot)com email was hosed for about a week, so if you sent me something in the past week, resend it, cause it’s lost on the intertubes somewhere. I’ve been putting in disgusting overtime trying to get things working, and think that I have most everything chugging along. Click below to read more…
I have to say, moving to Wordpress has not been an entirely pleasant experience. Because I used “symbianguru.typepad.com” for the first 6 months or so, I’m going to have to keep my Typepad site live for, well, for until I have enough new content that I don’t need the backlinks (which won’t be for a while). As such, you’ll notice that some of the older backlinks still have the old site design. Redoing the Typepad template is on the bottom of my priority list, so if it bothers you, I’m sorry.
Other than that, here’s a few things to note:
1. The mobile site, as you may have noticed, is *somewhat* back up and running. One of the reasons I moved to Wordpress was for the mobile plugin, because with it, all the hyperlinks that I put in my posts get transferred online, which is awesome. I’m looking into using Mippin to further mobilize even external links. If you haven’t checked it out, you should *definitely* go check Mippin out on your mobile. I’ll still use Winksite likely for the Apps Directory, which will be updated soon, as well. I’m also learning how to modify the theme, so that the mobile site isn’t as ugly as it is now.
2. Looks like I got all the permalinks working. If you find one that’s not, let me know, and I’ll try to get to it. Same for the RSS feed.
3. Images will take me a while. If you haven’t noticed, though, going forward I’m using my Flickr account to store the pics, so that I don’t hose my server. This shouldn’t be affecting page load times, but I’m keeping an eye on it.
4. The banner is taking me some time. Eventually it’ll look like the Tablet-Guru.com site, with the logo up top. I’ll also be adding more links to the top right, similar to what was on the old Symbian-Guru.
5. Wordpress makes it DEAD-EASY to insert ads places. I’ll be experimenting with this, so if you see some in a position that really obscures the site, let me know. I try not to overpower the site with ads, but I do try to at least cover my costs here at Symbian-Guru with them, and to those that don’t use Adblock or something similar, I greatly appreciate it. I promise you I’m not becoming a billionaire from ad revenue.
6. I will update the poll on the sidebar every week, so as to keep it new. If you have a suggestion for a poll, please shoot me an email and I’ll get it in there (might take a while, but I’ll use it).
I believe that’s it. This Thursday will be a dual-day of Driving with the Guru and Chatting with the Guru, since I missed last week. Hope you enjoy them both. As always, any and all feedback is tremendously appreciated. Leave it in the comments or shoot me an email, either way.
