Nokia Beta Labs Keeping Busy

I woke up this morning to see that the Nokia Beta Labs have been BUSY! They released a few new applications today, and I’m excited to let you know about them. The new apps include an update to the N-series PC Suite, an Ad-Supported Download! Client (For UK-only), and the first ever Internet Tablet app, the Internet Tablet Video Converter.

I’m installing the new Nseries PC Suite right now. I had been preparing a rant against the older one, but will hold back to see how this one fares. If you use PC Suite alot, I’d recommend holding back till I get a chance to test it. The N-series PC Suite doesn’t exactly have a great track record in terms of being good.

The Ad-Supported Download! client is a product of Nokia’s recent ad services work, and I’m sure is something we’ll see come to other markets soon. By adding banner ads in the client, they’re able to subsidize alot of the content you would typically have to pay for in the Nokia Download! app. Note that not all the content is free, but you may find some gems. Also, to encourage feedback, they’re offering a chance to win a Nokia E65 if you’re a UK resident and leave constructive feedback. Contest ends Dec. 20th, so hurry up.

The last is the Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter. This is the first Internet Tablet application to be offered on the Beta Labs pages, and apparently it will not be the last. I for one am glad to see Nokia doing some development work on the Tablet, I can list a few other apps that they need to pick up the ball on. I did a quick writeup of the Video Converter over at Tablet-Guru.com (which is now linked from the header bar, until the new site launches, at which point it’ll be more integrated). I also used it this morning and would like to say in its current state the application is rubbish. I will be putting together a comparison of 3 options for converting video to the Internet Tablet this week.
