Nokia: The Way We Live Next

I’m a few days late on posting this, but I wanted to really pore through it and highlight some things. Recently, Nokia announced via press release the "The Way We Live Next" media event, in which several Nokians involved in research and the Nokia Research Center participated in podcasts covering different topics relevant to the future and what it holds for mobile technology.

There’s seven podcasts total, you can get to them here, or use this RSS link to subscribe to the podcast in your Nokia Podcasting application. I listened to each one at least twice, and it’s really fascinating to hear how Nokia is using their research in a practical manner.

One topic you don’t want to miss is how web technologies drive innovation with Ganesh Sivaraman. If you’re a doubter of widgets, and the usefulness on a mobile handset, you really need to get ahold of Ganesh and spend some time listening to him. This guy is passionate about them, and also really excited about the doors that are opened up. I spent 10 minutes or so with him in Chicago earlier this year and it was greatness.

Another must-listen is Petteri Alinikula, VP, Nokia Research Center. I’d really like to meet this guy one day. The Nokia Research Center is where most of the technologies that we take for granted in our mobile handsets came from. Petteri talks about successes, but also how vital failure is to innovation and the discovery and growth of new technology. Really fascinating to listen to someone talk about failure in such a competitive market.

The rest of the podcasts are really good listens, as well. The thing that stands out to me is these are Nokians that are regarded as visionaries in their field, and just about every single one of them stresses instances where Nokia has taken real-world case studies and examples and directly applied those to the design and structure of future handsets. That, to me, is awesome, and a big reason why Nokia is the largest handset manufacturer in the world.
