S60.com Touch UI Info and Theme!

Screenshot0042

I got a message via Facebook earlier today that S60.com has updated their information regarding the new Touch UI that was announced at the Symbian Smartphone Show recently in London. The pages now give insight into the new abilities and opportunities that the touch UI offers, as well as a flash demo of different screens and transmissions.

There are apparently three key principles that have shaped the design of the new UI:

1. User Enjoyment - the UI needs to be fun without ever compromising its usability.

2. Smart Simplicity - usability tests have been conducted around the world with different languages and cultures.

3. Expandable Experiences - giving users the ability to decide not only what features they want on their handset, but also how the UI looks and feels.

Screenshot0043As part of this, they’ve also released the Haze visual theme, which is available here for installation on all S60v3 devices. I think the black and teal color scheme is awesome, though I not a huge fan of the new icons, honestly. What do you think? I’ve added it to the sidebar over on the right, and also updated m.Symbian-Guru.com with the download link, for your convenience.

*Edit* The theme has been removed after readers discovered several bugs. I have been informed that it will be fixed and then re-released, so stay tuned. In the meantime, feel free to use this killer theme from PhilTheWebSurfer.

  1. Agree, don’t like the frame on the icons. But then again, this may not be the “default” theme in the end, we’ll see.

  2. Does this mean nokia will take out a touch phone soon?

  3. Wut? R u crazy? You don’t like the new icons?!?! I mean just about ANYTHING is FAR better than the original icons that come loaded with s60 which are pretty much 2001-2002′ish. These are kewl :D well, not as much as the new icons that come with CarbideUI 3.2, see Nokia FP2 theme by PhilTheWebSurfer : http://goodphil.free.fr/nokia/themes/Serie%2060%20V3/Nokia%20FP2%20by%20PTWS.jpg !
Now those are amazing, but that doesn’t mean the Haze icons aren’t great. They are a huge step forward from the original icons we have now! And the whole black/emerald UI is much sexier than Nokia’s default green and blue ovals (wtf were they thinkin when they made that?)

  4. Wow, Rita, GREAT find with Phil’s theme! I don’t know how I missed that earlier! I do like those icons MUCH better than the ones in Haze. Wonder if P@sco or someone else would be able to merge the two?

  5. The frames around the icons make them look too iPhone for me..

  6. very big bug in the theme - try to type a number when in idle screen…

  7. Thanks for pointing that out, ICEman, I’ll pass the info along to the appropriate people.

  8. Two more bugs:

    1. when typing a message, you can’t see the typing cursor (it’s black on a black background).
    2. in the GPS satellite info (on a N95), you can’t see the reception strength bars (same as before, the bars are black on a black background).

  9. pity about the minor bugs in this. its a nice theme. Are there any similar themes like this that are free? something like the Psiloc Reflect Theme?

    Thanks,
    Darren.

  10. Ricky, I came across Phil’s theme a day or 2 ago, when Carbide.ui 3.2 was launched. I think his theme is pretty much the best theme I have ever seen. It’s clear, it’s simple, it’s sexy.
I’m pretty sure Pasco or Luca or Pizero will be using the new iconpack in their future themes. And if they don’t, we’ll make sure they do, ‘ight?
Oh and the bug reports are accurate, I immediately noticed them today while trying out the Haze theme.

  11. encountered same problems as ICEman and BarakRL

  12. Attractive theme - pity it has these bugs. It’s not really usable.

  13. The bug when entering a phone number is the only thing keeping me from using this theme, it should be pretty easy to fix, please talk to the “appropriate people” and report back when they correct it.

Thanks a lot! (S60 should have a simpler way of talking to them about those kind of things so we don’t have to wait until someone blogs about it to complain :P)

  14. Argh, the new screens i can see on the S60 page again look like they are only in WQVGA resolution.
I cant believe that they release something with such a bad screen in 2008.

I mean guys … QVGA is the way to go. A good internet experience on a phone is only possible with a high res display. :(

  15. The theme looks really nice but in the N80 i have always an white vertical stripe at the right side of the display. :( I wish this and the other buys will be corrected.

Ricky, please tell the guys about the N80 bug.

  16. I don’t like the new icons either… If you set your icon animation to “on” in the application menu it uses the default icons instead… much better IMHO…

  17. One other annoying bug is that the Caller Id is not visible. (White on white.) Makes this theme almost unusable on my N95.

  18. wer can i find it.. the m.symbain-guru.com dont work and the link site.. well i cant find it.. nehelp would be apprichated…

  19. The theme was taken down.

  20. I think the default icons which we have now are fairly good. After all, we need icons only for identification of the application and nothing more than that. By the way, what is the resolution of the animation displaying the touch interface?

  21. Hope you’ll like my version of Feature Pack 2 theme - http://forum.s-c.ru/download/217045_New%20Nokia%20Style_s-c.ru.sis i’ve changed some 3rd party icons and digital clock :)

  22. No news from this theme? D:

  23. no updates?

  24. Any news on the ‘officila’ Haze theme yet? The original is definitely the clearest of the different versions out there on my E61, but is, as the blog says, unusable due to the phone input/caller ID box being blank. Will the theme be fixed, does anyone know? It’s a cracking theme…
