Group Creator - Freeware by Mattias Danielsson
Starting today, I am planning to start a new feature on Symbian-Guru: Saturday Software Reviews. Like the name suggests, every Saturday, there will be one software for you to check. I will provide detailed reviews while also giving my opinion about the real-life usage of the software. I will try to be as consistent as I can with these reviews so I will divide them into these categories: what does it do, how does it work, pros and cons, real-life utility, wishlist, where & how much? I hope those cover everything you would want to know about any application.
Our first featured software is a freeware: Group Creator by Mattias Danielsson. In one word, if you ever tried formatting your mobile or switching mobiles, you’ll want this baby! Check out the full opinion after the break.
Group Creator, What?
Group Creator for S60 3rd Edition by Mattias Danielsson is the simplest software I have ever used on my mobile and yet it does exactly what I wanted it to do. The name says it all: it creates groups of contacts based on the fields in each contact’s card. This is still an unfinished version (v 0.96) and I can’t wait for him to release the v1.0 to see what else he will implement.
How?
When you open GroupCreator, you are presented with 2 settings:
When you’ve finished adjusting those settings, which is done not by pressing but by clicking right and left btw, you click on the center button and you can then select whether to group the contacts accordingly or delete all groups. Seriously could it get any more simple?

Pros & Cons
Little gems in this application are:
In Real-Life
I am sure this freeware will help many of you, especially those who have detailed contacts information. It’s easy to use, perfectly fit to its goal and fast considering what it does.
Now, do you remember I started by stating that you will love this software if you ever did format your mobile or switch mobiles (within the S60 3rd range, of course)? Well, I said it because if you have ever tried doing those, you would’ve noticed that Groups don’t get synched with Outlook. Meaning that you loose all your groups when you format and sync or get a new device and sync. Which sucks. With Group Creator, you have a good solution for this problem. And if you are as picky as me and need your groups exactly like you want them, here’s a tip: I have now updated my contacts on Outlook, adding in the Note field the name of the group I want them to be in. It took me a little time but from now on, I never need to worry about loosing my groups again, when formatting this mobile, updating its firmware or even switching to another S60 3rd device! Just run Group Creator and group by Note! 5seconds of work instead of 10+ minutes!
Wishlist
Of course, as with any software, there’s room for improvement like:
But for once I am not really interested in those additional options. I like this software for what it is and what it has allowed me to perform so far.
Talk Money & Availabilty!
You can download Group Creator from it’s official page. It is a freeware and I hope it will remain so. I do believe it’s a must-have. One more thing: don’t forget to mention Mattias in your everyday prayers!

have you stopped doing these reviews?
Dani2xll - No, there have been other Saturday Software Reviews still, though admittedly we’ve missed a few saturdays along the way. This Saturday will be CuteKeys from SymbianGuru.com (no connection)
