MD-3 Speakers Rock The Campout

A while back when I went camping, I had the opportunity to test out the Nokia MD-3 External Speakers in conjunction with my Nokia N81 8GB. The MD-3 Speakers are rather small, at 208mm x 69mm x 40mm (8″ x 2.7″ x 1.6″) and pretty lightweight, only coming in at 320g (11oz).
The MD-3 come with a 3.5mm audio lead, with 400mm (1 ft, 3in), plenty of length to connect whatever phone or audio device. Since it’s a standard 3.5mm plug, you can use these speakers with nearly ANY music device, including an iPod or MS Zune. That’s really convenient, and nice that Nokia is moving away from pop-port. When you turn the MD-3 on, up top there is a volume slider, with 2 speakers capable of outputting 2 watts each. There’s also a power button to conserve battery.
Another cool feature is that the MD-3 have an FM receiver built-in, so that you can use them with your Nokia’s FM radio application. This is a nice touch, and I’m glad Nokia thought to include it. Considering that they are merely a set of portable speakers, the MD-3’s build quality is really good. They don’t fold up or anything, so there isn’t much in terms of moving parts.
The only really negative thing that I could come up with is that the MD-3 runs off 3 AA batteries. There is a port to use the standard Nokia charger as a power supply, which is nice, but I wish that Nokia would use rechargable battery packs in their accessories. I noticed this with both the MD-6 and SU-8W, that Nokia is using standard batteries rather than utilizing a rechargable option for users.
Audio output through the speakers is really nice. Sounds were true, and the bass is very nice, not washed out at all. I tried several different types of music such as techno, country, rock, and classical, and all sounded terrific. I had a tough time finding buy links for you guys, so here are the ebay links. At $38 shipped, they’re not exactly cheap, but the sound quality is pretty good. These speakers would be excellent for a day on the lake or sitting out by the hot tub in the winter. Even around the house these would sound really good, and offer a better sound experience than the speakers built into your handset.
