Nokia Internet Radio Grows Up

I’ve used the S60 Internet Radio application from the Nokia Research Center’s website on several phones. I was really disappointed when I discovered that my N95 had issues with the Shoutcast.com website, as that’s what enabled me to find new stations on the go.

That’s why I was REALLY thrilled to hear about Nokia’s new Internet Radio application for S60v3! It’s only officially supported on a few handsets, but if you’ve got an S60v3 handset, load it up and give it a go, it just might work! This app rocks, frankly. I’m able to use WiFi or a cellular network, and Nokia has put together a REALLY easy to use directory feature.

The main screen is simple: Last played station, Favourites, Station Directory, and Search. That’s all you need. In the directory, you can browse by genre, language, or country. There is also a Top Stations list if you’re into listening to what everyone else does. I found the selection to be pretty large, though unfortunately my favorite, Groove Salad, is not currently listed in the directory.

Luckily, you can also add your own streams, though in this version, it will only allow you to put in an http:// address. I need to find the one for Groove Salad badly.

Speaking with the demo person at Nokia World on this, it will be offiicially supported on as many new phones as they can in the future, though it will likely work on any S60v3 device out there. They also plan to load it into the Download! app regionally, when possible, to make it really easy to get.

  1. I have got this app installed over the Download! thingie, like two weeks ago. So it’s already in there.

    It quite rocks.

I like how you can specify multiple bitrates for each station.

    For Groove Salad try
    http://scfire-nyk-aa03.stream.aol.com/stream/1018

  2. Nokia Internet Radio supports Shoutcast Playlists, to get Groove Salad

    Go to http://shoutcast.com/directory/index.phtml

Search for Groove Salad, right click on the ‘Tune in’ button and select ’save target as’ (or ‘download linked file’ if using a mac

Now transfer the download .pls file to your phone via bluetooth and open it from your inbox, you can then save the stations to your favourites.

  3. Doesnt work on e65. And i´m not able to uninstall it. :(

  4. Ricky, will either http://somafm.com/play/groovesalad or http://scfire-dll-aa01.stream.aol.com:80/stream/1018 work?

The internet radio doesn’t work on the N75, but that address will play just fine in RrealPlayer.
