GreenPeace released on the 26th of November their 6th version of the Guide to Greener Electronics. The guide, which is updated every 3 months, ranks the leading electronics industries (cell phones, televisions, computers, game consoles and more) according to their environmental friendliness. As Green Peace explains, the ranking is based on two criteria: the hazardous substances elimination and the recycling of used products.
Nokia, which was once was leading the way with an 8.0 score, now ranks as 9th, major step down for our beloved Finnish industry, while Nintendo managed to grab the worst score ever: a ZERO, proof that no company is perfect. The new leader of the green movement is Sony Ericsson. You can download the whole guide as a pdf.
That is one ranking system in which I wouldn’t mind seeing serious competition for Nokia. With the ecological concern being as important as it is now, it is great to see companies battling it out over really meaningful territories. After all if the human species gets extinct, it wouldn’t matter if the greatest mobile device is released since nobody would be here to enjoy it. Well that’s too extreme, but we are sure headed this way if no one steps and does something about it. We sure hope Nokia and Nintendo get their act together before the next version is released.
