NokNok.tv Knocks On The Accelerometer’s Door

Ever since the N95’s accelerometer was “discovered”, there have been some software that improved with it, some that added a fun feature with it and some that provided Ricky with an alibi to spoof around in video and share it for our general amusement. But as Ricky questioned while covering the new bits of accelerometer goodness,

What do you think are the real, practical uses of the accelerometer? [...] Personally, I’m not sure what I’d like the accelerometer to do. I mean, it’s such a cool feature, but I’m not really sure what the *practical* uses are just yet. What do you think?

Back then, there were many comments suggesting useful, impressive or weird applications of the accelerometer. The fact is that the accelerometer is a more of a tool and has therefore unlimited usage everywhere on the platform. One good example is Nokmote. The first video showed it controlling almost everything on the device and the new released video shows just how good of a gaming experience (combined with TV-out) it can provide: no more staring at the phone to find that accurate key to press and no more accidental key presses: just play intuitively. It provides a sort of similar experience to the Wii (will probably explore that later) except that your tiny device is both the console and the remote.

But gaming and controlling the device is just scratching the surface of the accelerometer’s potential and that is what Mike from NokNok.tv has just proved with his post N95 accelerometer: Top 5 ways it should be used. While I agree with each and every one of his 5 suggestions, I am extremely interested to see these specific ones implemented somehow: the super-orientated speakerphone, the aural and physical feedback and the shaky shortcuts. Click through to the post to know what I am talking about. And don’t forget to drop a line here and tell us what you think of these 5 uses, what other implementations can you imagine and any other crazy idea that you think is worth mentioning.

Personally, I don’t know why but every time I think about the accelerometer, I keep imagining a software that would allow me to play a couple of pranks with my friends, like a “this phone is possessed” deep horrifying voice coming out when they hold it vertically or horizontally. I know this wouldn’t be the typical life savior application but it sure would let me get rid of one very annoying person in my surroundings who is always after my mobile.
