Latest update for 6110 Navigator does exactly the same. There is no need for backup before flashing. I was pleasanlty surprised :). Nice one Nokia!

    hi

my question is - why such stupid extra work - symbian/nokia should improve their backup instead !

if backup/restore would work 100% one would not need to worry about firmware updates - do a backup; update firmware; restore backup - it would have a positive side effect that one can be sure to save all data of a device and not only 60% or so !

    ciao
  • eb08 - The point of User Data Preservation is that it eliminates the need to backup and restore. That step is entirely removed from the equation. You simply update, and wa-la, you're on your way again.

You can use Nokia software updater to "reinstall" your firmware for whatever reason. I used nemisis to change my product code, and then Nokia software updater to reflash my N82 with Euro1 firmware. Everything worked perfectly, all the settings are as I left them, all the icons are organized into folders as I had them, all the applications are still installed, and all user files (videos, pictures, music etc) are still there. I think the only thing that didn't work, was shareonline got unpaired with my flickr account, but that only took two seconds to fix. Try it yourself, use Nokia software updater to reinstall your firmware.

N81 has User Data Preservation since day 1.

I made 2 firmware updates with my N81 and never did a backup. All was on its same place after the update ;-)

I was wondering if there is an option to have a fresh upgrade (without preserving the data)

It would be good to have this option selectable prior to updating the phone.

The main reason for this is that it would be clearing all the unwanted 'cookies' and as such data (that might no longer be required) so as to free the resources and have a clean phone every time software is upgraded.
