YouTube Hits Your Mobile From All Sides
If you’re a YouTube fanatic, there are now SEVERAL opportunities to get your fix on the go, using your S60v3 handset. YouTube today launched a dedicated application (unfortunately in Java) that offers you access to ‘virtually’ the entire video library. The interface is REALLY slick, and even allows you to upload videos to your account through the application, which means you can post longer, better quality videos (though the YouTube 10 min/100MB limit still stands) directly from your mobile. You can download the YouTube application by visiting this link on your mobile phone (thanks to Stefan for finding the workaround).
The new mobile application allows you to search, browse popular videos, and even offers the ability to log into your account to access your favorites, playlists, and view your subscriptions. Unfortunately, one major feature is still missing, and that is the ability to see the list of videos that your subscriptions have uploaded since you last checked.
The biggest issue, however, with this new mobile client, is that the video quality SUCKS, even for YouTube (not exactly known for high-quality). This is where EmTube really shines. EmTube is up to v1.0.10, and while basic in the interface, the playback quality of the videos is beautiful. It’s likely that this is due to EmTube being a native S60 application, as opposed to a java app. You can download EmTube here.
Which of these two applications do you prefer? The rich interface and robust abilities of the YouTube app, or the superior quality of EmTube?

I prefer emTube much more… the official YouTube application is Java-based app -> the UI performance is too slow.
I prefer emTube for watching videos but will use the YouTube mobile app to upload videos on the fly.
emTube definitely!
By the way: java apps tend to use more battery power
definitely emtube. the only function missing is to log in my account (i can upload video by shozu).
I tested the youtube application today on my N95. The application is very intuitive and easy to use. I did not see any particular sluggishness in the UI. The dark interface is very beautiful, too. But, I can very confidently say that the quality of the videos are very, very bad. Too bad that it makes the application useless for anything.
Also, youtube videos shown in the web browser on youtube website and played back by real player (after installing adobe flash player lite 3) has the same low quality. So it seems that this is not the applications fault, but youtube’s decision to send low quality videos to mobiles (either via web browser or this application). I wonder why Youtube decided to downgrade the quality for mobiles.
Unfortunately emtube refuses to show videos on N95. I also find Samir’s YTPlayer has a lot of potential when it is ready. But once youtube decides to give regular quality videos to mobiles, this application would definitely be the easy winner.
