Geek vs Guru Day 4 - New Title and a Giveaway

I realize this is a day late, but I’ve been incredibly busy. Also, after wondering for a few days, I got word that Matt, the Nokia Geek, has some stuff going on and will likely be unable to help me finish off the rest of the contest. I have confidence that he’ll be back in action soon, but in the meantime, decided to go ahead and push through, though I’m changing the title to YOU vs Guru!I’m going to need more people doing this with me, so that I have some motivation to continue. This is a milestone in my life, as the first time that I’ve ever maintained any sort of a health schedule for longer than about 10 minutes. It’s really simple to join in. All you need to do is head on over to the Nokia Sports Tracker Beta site and set yourself up an account. It’s free, as is the Nokia Sports Tracker application. You can add me as a friend, rcadden, and then I can see your routes. To help kick this off, Nokia was kind enough to send me 8 of the Nokia CP-218 armbands. Phil demo’d these on See Into S60 a while back, and when Geek vs Guru got started, I let him know I’d need several to give away to participants. Here’s the skinny on how to get one. Scratch what I said in the video, you’re going to need to setup a Sports Tracker profile, and upload at least one workout each week. There’s no minimum length or time.

Each week, you’ll need to leave a comment on the Geek vs Guru post with your username and the distance you covered. At the end of the week I’ll go through and randomly pick one person who I’ll contact to ship them the Nokia CP-218.

Easy as that, folks. See you again on Thursday!

  1. Dude, I’m joining in! Need to get off my ass. My motivation is a little different to your’s though, but more to come on that in a flixwagon vid in a bit ;-)

  2. I’m in, Jogku was started because of Nokia Geek and You. First run in 20 year done http://tinyurl.com/39ya4w

See you on Jogku @ Jaiku

  3. My first ‘workout’ done…only 1 mile this time, but hopefully push that up to 1.1 miles next time out…..

You can check it out here…. (I had to stop half way through my run, to let my mates dogs out, just incase you were worried that I had passed out for a few minutes) http://s60blogger.com/?p=105

My flixwagon video seems to be a little iffy today though, so it may/may not work for you. To be honest, you may well be a lucky punter if it doesn’t work for you.

  4. I was going to do this but I’m having problems getting Sports Tracker installed. It keeps giving me an “update error” when I try to install to my N95-3. Any idea what might be causing that? I’ll have to work on it later when I have more time.

  5. @Tony - check to make sure that you don’t already have it installed in some random folder or something. Look in the application manager.

Are you downloading the .sis file from somewhere, or using the Download! app directly on the phone?

  6. Nope, don’t see it in the application manager. I originally downloaded the .sis from the Nokia betalabs site. Then I tried getting it from the Download! app. Either way, I keep getting that update error. Does it need to be installed on the system memory or the memory card, or does it not matter? I tried both, but no luck. Could the Nokia Activity Monitor be interfering with it somehow?

  7. Tony,
I had to uninstall Activity Monitor in order to install Sports Tracker. Sportstracker counts steps as well though. If you are on Jaiku, join us on Jogku

  8. Second “jog” of the week completed. http://sportstracker.nokia.com/nts/workoutdetail/index.do?id=85932 Bit slow as I hurt my leg in the first 2-3 minutes.

  9. Got it to work now. I had to uninstall Activity Monitor first. I thought I remembered reading about an incompatibility somewhere. I thought I also read that it had been fixed in a more recent version of Sports Tracker also. Apparently not. Nope, I’m not on Jaiku. I didn’t even know about it before they closed it to new registrations.

  10. Okay, finally got everything working and figured out how to upload the workouts to the sportstracker site. I have one walk and one run uploaded so far. My user name is tstray and my most recent “work out” is here: http://sportstracker.nokia.com/nts/workoutdetail/index.do?id=88574

  11. Guess I’m sort of in as well. Got my first vid online but noticed I deleted the wrong one… Well, check out my progress at http://sportstracker.nokia.com/nts/user/profile.do?u=localhost
