Samsung formally announced its latest S60 handset, the G810, at the Mobile World Congress this week. Samsung is one of the licensees of S60, but you wouldn’t know it because they rarely make handsets using the Symbian-based operating system. When they do, however, they’re usually pretty fantastic. Eldar over at Mobile-Review has apparently been tinkering with the G810 for a while now, and has already got a full review up on his site. Eldar is pretty impressed with the G810 overall, though maintains that the N95′s imaging results are slightly better. Grab a whole pot of coffee if you plan to read his review, it covers EVERYTHING you could possibly want to know, with PLENTY of eye-candy as well.
The G810 is interesting to me due to the 3x optical zoom, image stabilization, and facial recognition features in the camera. These are features that have not previously been available in S60 handsets (other than the optical zoom, of course), though they definitely should be, as Nokia puts out ‘imaging kings’ such as the N82 and N95.
The Samsung G810 also features a Google search box directly on the Active Standby screen, which is really convenient, though with yesterday’s announcement should be available on Nokia’s S60 handsets soon, as well.
Other confirmed features include WiFi, GPS, TV-Out, and HSDPA (2100MHz). I love that Samsung is still putting out S60 handsets, and the G810 only confirms what I know to be true, that if Nokia could somehow convince the other licensees to develop more S60 handsets, the competition would only be a good thing and would encourage features such as the facial recognition and optical zoom to be implemented in more handsets. Don’t you agree?
