Smart Settings Unveiled

If I had a penny for everytime I read “when will Smart Settings be available?” on the blogs and forums, I would be the richest person on earth now! Well, the waiting is basically over and SmartSettings IS available, at least in beta for now. MobiFunSoft , the developers expect it to be released in March 2008 so it’s not that far. So what does SmartSettings do? Basically it allows you to perform 3 different actions:

1 - Autolock the device after a certain period of idle time, in all profiles or in one certain profile, with the ability to choose exception programs. This is the same functionality that MrLock, a freeware by the same developer, provides. I have previously reviewed MrLock over on Dotsisx (and I still love it as much as I did when I wrote it).

2 - Change the lock/unlock combinations. This should be great for slider devices, and I have the N81 in mind. The N95 can be locked/unlocked using the left then right softkey combination, the N81 can’t. The only way to do it is with the top lock key, and that isn’t practical at times.

3 - Add a 10 shortcut menu to one of the softkeys on standby. Basically, this adds SmartSettings on the chosen softkey, and when you press it, you get a list of 1 to 10 applications that you can manually pick and order (see screenshot). I am not a big fan of this as I love CuteKeys and NStarter because they allow me to lunch my apps from everywhere in the phone and not just standby. Although some people might like SmartSettings because of this, that way they don’t have to worry if they set a shortcut that is used by some other application for something totally different.

I had never tried SmartSettings on an S60 2nd device, but I can understand the fuss about it. It combines 3 major improvements in one software and after having gotten my hands on a beta, it works well on the phone.
