And The Golden Symbian Goes To…

And The Golden Symbian Goes To…

In a time when we’re all looking at the new announcements, the new devices that already light our eyes with a spark of lust, the new features that we believe will make our life more comfortable, Steve Litchfield at AAS has stepped back for a second to appreciate the path we have gone through. In his Top 10 - Classic Smartphones epic review, Steve lists the devices that mattered in the recent Symbian Smartphone history, the ones that were cutting edge at the time they were released, the ones that brought so much innovation that people stared at them basically the same way a kid stares at a huge lollipop.

Looking at Steve’s Top 10, I can’t help but think how young I am in this whole world: my whole mobile love relationship goes 2 years back, probably 25 months if I push it. With his post, Steve helps newbies like me appreciate the development and the work that went into the Symbian platform years ago, as well as the timeline of the cutting edge technology’s introduction. Did you know that WiFi was available in devices in 2004, and it is only now that manufacturers have finally decided that it would be a good idea to implement it over all their newer lines?

If you’re a mobile fanatic, you have to take a look at this Top 10 and read closely through the explanations. Although some might think that the N82, N91, or the 6600 have a place in this run down, I have to say that I agree with all of Steve’s choices: at the time of their release, the 10 epic handsets had the “best of all worlds”, a thought I have discussed a while ago. But most importantly, I have to say that after reading, I was a little surprised to see that I have had my hands on 6 of the 10 featured mobiles, though I owned none of them.

I won’t spoil the surprise for you, but I’m just going to say that the Nokia 7650 got me interested in S60, and that the Nokia 6630 that my friend owned was the reason that I decided to buy an S60. I also have to add that I am most definitely annoyed that I have never gotten my hands on the Number One device, but that a week ago, I started to get interested in it again because of these posts by James Burland. I think it still has a lot to offer even now, and it’s such a shame I have never used one! Enough said, now click through the links to fill in the blanks in this story.

  1. I’d have to say the Nokia 6600/6620 was one of the best Symbian phones ever made. I think it converted a lot of mid-range phone buyers to Symbian, and I think it should be on the list. Otherwise, I agree, although I’m not too sharp on UIQ devices.

  2. xj, you are right: the 6600 had this little plus that introduced S60 to the public masses. I can’t count how many people I have seen carrying an 6600 a couple of years ago! But I think it isn’t featured because it didn’t bring the “new” in terms of technology.
