Express Color Popping For Your Photos
Photoshop Express was released a few days ago. It is a RIA or a Rich Internet Application, that allows users to modify their pictures online, without the need of any pre-installed software on their computer. Now although the name is “Photoshop Express”, neither words are adequate since the application is sluggish and slow to load, and only the basic modifications have been implemented so far. Don’t expect to see Layers and Filters just yet, but we have to applaud the effort behind it and hope that it will improve over time to include more powerful photoshopping.
For the average user, this news wouldn’t be of such importance, unless you read James Burland’s Video tutorial for Eye Popping colours from your Nseries. In this tutorial, James explains how you can use Photoshop Express’ Pop Color to bring some life into your pictures: “Pop Color is a color isolation effect, it desaturates almost the entire image leaving just one vivid color untouched”. Translating this into a language both you and I can understand, it means that Pop Color will turn all the image into grayscale and leave just one color as it is. This will make this color pop out of the picture.
For a detailed explanation of the process, just watch James’ explanatory video and see the resulting (amazing) images in his Flickr set, then head to Photoshop Express, sign in (for free) and create some magic!
As for me, I have been waiting for ages to learn how to do this. I recently got myself to start using Photoshop, and been wondering ever since how to make one color stand out of the rest of the image. I never got time to tinker it in Photoshop itself, but now I know how to do it. Never too late. You can head over to my Photoshop Gallery to see the images I have modified so far. All of them were taken during my trip to Jordan, and I tried my best to make the color popping relevant, though I still believe the ones James uploaded on his Flickr are far superior.

Thanks for the mention… I agree ‘Express’ is perhaps not the best name for Adobes new web app, but it *is* surprisingly quick at some things, which bodes well for the future I guess. Loved your canyon image by the way, very cool.
Thanks James, the canyon one was in Petra. Great landscape
I agree, canyon image is really nice.

[...] Steve’s prone to taking on guest appearances for the Smartphones Show, and I was really pumped when I found out that my friend James Burland, of Nokia Creative, would be appearing on this episode. James is a master of photoshop, and has developed a knack for finding out cool things he can do with the photos he takes with his Nseries handsets, such as Tilt-Shift, or the Pop Color that we covered previously.
