Smartphones Show 55 Is Up, Steals My Thunder

Steve Litchfield has posted up the latest episode of his Smartphones Show, with a look at the Samsung i450 music-oriented S60 handset. Matt Redmond also makes an appearance with some thoughts on the Apple iPhone SDK, and I have to say, I enjoy Matt’s honesty towards the iPhone. He doesn’t seem to be awash with blind fanboyism, and it’s refreshing. Keep up the good work.

Steve also managed to steal my thunder by helpfully walking you through setting up your Gmail IMAP access with the built-in mail client on your S60v3 handset. I’ve been secretly working on a similar post of my own, as I’ve recently started using it and really am enjoying the flexibility and usefulness. No problem, Steve, it’s an excellent walkthrough!

As always, you can get the Smartphones Show on your S60v3 handset by downloading the Symbian-Guru OPML file, along with several other mobile-related podcasts. Please note that the feed address for MoBuzzTV has changed, and I will be updating the OPML file soon.

  1. I am also really enjoying the IMAP functionality in combination with my gmail account, have been practically using it since GMAIL started supporting it.
Though i have one small problem, when I read emails on my n95-2 they become read on my N95 but not on the actual server, this can be quite annoying at times. And all this in contrary with the E90, which DOES also mark them as read on the actual gmail server.
Is it just that Nseries dont support this or am i doing something wrong?

  2. @Rob - On my N95-3, they eventually get marked as read on the server, too, but it’s not instant. I’ve not timed it, but I think it happens the next time it connects to check, which can be at least 15-30 minutes, depending on when you have it set to check.

I’ll tinker a bit more, but I can confirm that using it on the Nseries, it WILL mark them read on the server, it’s just not instantaneous.

  3. Ahh I see, I’m too impatient. I’ll give it a go today. thanks for your response!
