N95 8GB Firmware Update Adds Auto Screen Rotation

N95 8GB Firmware Update Adds Auto Screen Rotation

I’m sure you’re all shocked and everything, but the Nokia N95 8GB has received yet ANOTHER firmware update, bringing it to v20.0.016. This new update adds Auto Screen Rotation, which we first saw on the Nokia N82, and is already possible using apps such as RotateMe. The accelerometer in the phone determines whether the screen should be portrait or landscape, giving an iPhone-like experience.

Steve over at AllAboutSymbian noticed that User Data Preservation is not yet included, but reckons it should be in a future update. Also, interestingly enough, neither Maps 2.0 nor the new Ngage client are included. Pssst, hey Nokia, if you want people to use those, you NEED to put them in the firmware, asap.

Also, not to beat a dead horse or anything, but please notice that this is YET ANOTHER update for a member of the N95 family, while the N95-3 STILL languishes without the luxuries of Flash Lite 3, Demand Paging, or Web Runtime support, all of which are now available for every other member of the N95 family. Thanks, Nokia. Glad you’re paying attention to the U.S. market and not shafting the first adopters who likely sold their N95-1 at a loss, just to get the first S60 handset to support HSDPA in the U.S., the N95-3. Do you guys even remember that N95-3 owners EXIST? Seriously?

(Note to readers - I’m finding it really hard to get upset about the lack of updates for the N95-3 anymore. I mean, it’s just getting tiresome mentioning it over and over and over again, with nothing happening. Nokia rocks at communicating, save for big lapses like this. This N95-3 update, if and when we get it, had better ROCK and bring something REALLY cool)

  1. (…This N95-3 update, if and when we get it, had better ROCK and bring something REALLY cool)

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

  2. OOps finally, its done,But better add some controlling too,cos the N82’s Auto rotation makes things messy sometimes. Why don’t they buy Samir’s Rotate me and Embed it into the firmware?

  3. Dos this update work on the N95-4 as well?

  4. Mate - DO NOT GIVE UP!

As a European (get me) I think it’s an absolute mockery that Nokia have yet to even address the fact that you N95-3 owners are yet to see an upgrade to your firmware.

I mean COME ON! The connections you must have and you STILL don’t know? No one’s actually reached out to you to let you know?

I mean - How much work can it actually be?

Even with my limited knowledge base - I’d argue that you’re looking at 1-3 days work at best.

    Sort it out Nokia.
    You’re upsetting your fans.

  5. You’re damn right we’re upset. I’m not an s60 blogger so I have nothing to lose when it comes to selling my N95-3 and starting over on some other (read: American-friendly) platform).

  6. Come on Ricky!!!

We all N93-3’s owners feel the same about the firmwares! Remember that you have the voice loud enough to make Nokia listen… Hope Nokia do something, not just listen…

    Keep it UP!!!

  7. I too am an owner of an N95-3, but I should point out that the USA is not the only place where that model is in use, I am in Australia.

This particular model is sold by our largest Telco, Telstra for operation on their “NextG” network, which combines UMTS and GSM on 850/2100MHz.

  8. Hi,
I’m a European owner of an N95 8gb and I must add that after the Firmware update, the #Button doesn’t switch to silence anymore.

  9. All I hope is that Auto-rotate functionality does not
have any ill-effect with all the other kool apps which work
    on similar lines.

  10. VJ, with ASR enabled it seems to mess with the quality of EmTube(when it worked…)

Besides, like I’ve said before, the ASR isn’t anything to shout about. Mine is off.

  11. Unreal, although, I guess I should have expected this from Nokia. The N95-3 has been the red headed step child of the N95 series from the get go.. why stop now. While I never have had the attitude that Nokia owes me firmware upgrades to increase phone functionality, it is depressing to see the rest of the N95 series getting these upgrades and the 95-3 owners getting
nothing. Unfortunately, it leaves me feeling that Nokia just doesnt care. I mean, We know that Nokia knows all of the N95-3 owners are upset..they read the blogs…they are hardly to be considered stupid.. So then.. Why no upgrade? Because they dont care, and they know that eventually, we will all be out there spending another 600 bucks on the next new phone.. Shame on you Nokia.

  12. “Nokia rocks at communicating?”… What kind of a joke statement that is? How do they “rock” at communicating? By having some stupid S60 blogs or Nokia Beta Labs blog? Sorry but I don’t see it. Make no mistake: this corporation is all about making profit, they don’t give a you know what about communicating and stupid blogs. Give me profit for the investor and shut up! That’s the sad Nokia way.

  13. @cabby - I would say that Nokia does indeed ‘rock’ at communicating with the public, specifically as compared to other handset manufacturers. Can you link me to the Windows Mobile blogs, where those that are working on the platform talk about it with consumers? How about the iPhone blogs, or the BlackBerry ones? Sounds to me like they don’t exist.

When was the last time Samsung webcasted a press conference, and put real live Product Managers online for anyone to login and ask them questions directly?

I’m not saying they’re not in for profit. Clearly, that’s the goal of any organization (even nonprofits, who still need to at least break even). However, the way in which the company goes about it is the key.

Nokia embraces the consumer in a way that no other handset manufacturer, bar none, does, and for that, I believe they indeed ‘rock’ at communicating.

  14. As far as I remember the changelog for v20 for N82-1 listed improvements in the auto rotation feature. And I must say that it feels that way to me, too.

So hopefully this also got into this firmware update.

  15. I hope Nokia release the long-awaited N95-3 firmware with all the features other phones are getting, if thats the case then the wait will be worth and i will continue to buy their products, if not… Sony Ericsson X1 here we go!!!

  16. Well then stop complaining about it. It will come, don’t worry.

  17. is that update orking on n95
i updated my phone yet i didnt see the change till now
